Load a 14r with come alongs
02/14/21 1:09 PM

I bought two $27 come alongs with 25' straps from HomeDepot to load a bike without engine power and the only other tool I used was a pair of channel locks because the straps would occasionlly get in the way of the gear notches. It was sort of slow but I expected that.

Ingenious, a bit cumbersome levers but a good way to load your bike on your own!

Congrats but I wonder why. Not trying to start anything but I am age 65 with a 5X10 trailer with a loading gate that goes down and no problem to push the bike up to the tire chock. I can see the advantage if the bike was wrecked and trying to load it or maybe a flat tire. Come to think of it many lotsa long years ago I had to pick up a M109R with a flat back tire and it took 3 of us to get it on the trailer but we had to use 2X4 pcs of wood to get the middle of the bike over the gate to trailer hump. Your idea may have come in handy that day. I now carry a can of fix-a-flat for them occasions.

Lytnin, you said why? Well even though you're a stout old man, if you lose your balance and she falls and breaks a fairing, I hope you're also a rich old man. Nuff said!

Kinda wondering why one wouldn't just drive the bike up on there? You know, just ease her up with yer feet planted? That's how I'd be doing it anyway. That ramp isn't angled all that much.If footing is a worry, get two 2X6's for either side for your footing.
Okay.So now she's in there. What about taking her out?You gonna just back it out sitting on it using your feet for stability? If so,then why not do just the opposite to load her?
Maybe I'm just 'practical'?IDK.Looks like a real hassle to get all setup and such.
Not being critical, just wondering why you would do this.
I mean,I could see this if a person had balance issues and such. But you don't seem to.

Grn14, of course you would ride the bike up if she had power. This was a demo of how to load a bike safely IF the bike didn't have power. And it's much easier to off load without power than to up load. You're not going to be able to sit on the bike and walk it up the ramp and onto the wheel chock unless you're a 21 year old Arnold Swarteneger but anyone could rock it off the chock and down the ramp while sitting on the bike--geez man that's common sense.

I guess if your bike had no power and if you were a frail individual and if you didn’t have a friend willing to help push then it would work.

It works and you don't worry about dropping the bike. I think if you do this a five times you'll be rolling it up on your own. It's not so hard if you have the truck parked facing a slight downhill grade. If you can't get it all the way up, grab the brake and roll it back down to have another shot at it. Better safe than sorry for now.

It looks like your hitch could have another inch drop in it. That will make the ramp steeper but as I'm sure you know, the trailer will ride better especially uphill. You might not be able to clear the top of the ramp unless you lift your butt off the seat though. It was close with the U-Haul trailer I used.

I can see how one would be gunshy rolling this beastie up from the side.I'll admit, just having a wheel chock setup in my garage at one point on the FLAT surface I was able to drop my bike on it's side when I went to try and roll it outta the chock. The chock was one of those solid plated kind that have a 'scoop' for the front tire in there at the bottom. When ya rolled the wheel in,that scoop actually rocked in there and came up in the back to help secure the wheel.Trying to rock it loose was a REAL pain.Hence when it did pop loose, the bars ended up turned and I couldn't catch the fall quick enough.Never used it again!lol. You could NOT sit on the bike and reverse it outta that chock.Ya had to stand next to the bike and rock it till it grudgingly 'bounced' over the angled plate on the rear part.Real drag.

Hi Rook, my bike is lowered so even under power, I can't load on a down hill because the bottom drags because of the steeper trailer gate. If you look closely at the video, you'll see my truck's rear tires were on ramps to create an artificial climb for the come alongs. Now that I think abóut it, I could use those ramps on the trailer tires to over come a down hill grade if I ever run into that situation.

Better safe than sorry there, skewed. I just recently bough a rear handle stand because I was removing the dog bones on my busa. The nuts are so tight, I was afraid a forward handle stand might tip backward when I wrenched. It probably would have been ok but I'd rather not find out the hard way.

Grn, I used a Condor wheel chock and it was as you described. I rolled the tire in under power and when I took it out, I had to bounce it a couple times to flip the scoop down. I'm in the market for a Condor now because I'm afraid to use the rear handle stand without something holding the bike up. I'm sure I could put a couple 2x4s under the side stand but I don't want to risk it until I'm very familiar with the stand.

Dropping a bike when you are riding it has got to suck but dropping it when you're not riding is worse.
