Would you purchase NEW or consider a DEMO??
01/19/13 10:01 PM

Hello,

Unfortunately, I missed out on a few nice used ZX14Rs price between $10.3k-$11k (under 1000 miles). Now, I'm opening up to purchasing new.

I've seen a few leftover 2012's for $12.5k (includes prep/freight, state sales tax and title will be extra).
Today, I came across a 2012 with 600 miles and the first service performed. The dealer was pretty set on $12.3k.

I'm in the Chicago area, so no riding for awhile. I may still wait and see if any used ones show up, but tempted just to go new, or consider the demo I saw today. Any recommendations regarding purchasing new versus the demo?

THANKS

Hey Bean , I know that bike.
They loaned it to me when I had a tyre being fitted to the Busa.
Took it through Chain of Ponds and the bacck way to Birdwood, Kersbrook and back home.
Bought one the next day, but not off SA Bikes, they were $1500 worse on the trade than Boltons.
They did a good job of selling a new bike for another dealer

I was waiting to read...."Hey Bean , I know that bike. They loaned it to me when I had a tyre being fitted to the Busa.
They told me to go easy because it was just getting broken in, but I said what the hell. Bangin wheelies and jumpin curbs with it for hours"...... :-D

Did the Lobethal loop , coffee at the Amberlight cafe, bikes and bullh#it , lunch at Mannum, all the while dodging thousands of pushbikes and cops.
Counted 6 bikes and 2 patrol cars between Cuddlee creek and Lobethal.
All part of the tour down under.
Ya gotta wonder blokes doing 80 kms downhill on bicycles in lycra and shorts.
Thats gotta hurt if ya come off
.ps didn`t flog the bike, but chain of ponds was a buzz

If it has any demo miles on it, NO probably not unless the price was like half normal. Brake in is important to me and you can bet it was not broke in tge way I do it if it was ridden as a demo model.

Floor model, that I would recomend but take it out in the daylight and look it over with a spy glass. Tiny scratches, chips from improper, hasty transportation out of the crate. Hell, I'd rather just pay the xtra $1000 and receive a brand new factory paint job on my brand new bike.

If I'm buying a new bike, it has to be new or an insanely good deal. Otherwise might as well buy a used one.

Thanks for the responses. I decided to pass on the demo. Even with the first service being performed, it's just not worth it when I new one is priced about the same. If it was like $11k, I'd reconsider. Thanks for the input.

Really, half normal price for a demo? Have you ever seen a deal like that? I never have, and I would do that in a heartbeat.

I guess a demo would be fine....depending.IF you bought a new bike...drove it,and didn't like it...what would you get back? That's what you should pay.I can't see anything that would damage a new bike just driving it as a demo...?????

I think a demo with a little miles id ok, but didnt this one have over 600 miles on it ? that seems like a lot for a demo, got to be careful these days, even dealers sell damaged goods, so to speak, I know a lady that bought a supposedly new car from a dealer, and with a lot of digging and some help, she found out the car had been in an accident and repaired, and sold as new, doesnt happen all the time, but you never know ..

Only bike I might consider buying that is a demo and had 600 miles on it, would be a BMW 1000RR, they have a limiter on the rpms until the 600 mile service is done .....

Just imagining what circumstances I would buy a demo and that is it. No, never saw it offered and don't expect to because there are too many people who will go for $500 off the the going rate.

There you go Grn, a very low miles Yamaha R1, lol Just like what happened to Carabuser friend and her car. All the bike dealer has to do, is replace a few minor things here and there, and the bike looks like brand spanking new, lol

Of course, you're right.

What I had in my mind was, an abused demo cycle. I would certainly like to know if a demo rider pinned the throttle to the rev limiter in numerous gears, over numerous run-ups, in one ride.

Think of it as someone flogging a brand new cycle, right off the floor, with no break-in period (yes, I know, not everyone subscribes to the "gentle break in" philosophy here).

...and then giving it back with no one the wiser.

If you *did* subscribe to the "gentle break in period", and you bought this demo, you would want to know, right? You might not want to buy it, then. If you knew, that is, and I'm pretty sure that, without a Flash sniffer (with abuse data recorded in non-volatile memory), you never would find out.

But, the dealership service dept. *might* find out, when they examin that Flash memory just before delivery (if there is such an address space in the on-board NVM,recording each occurance or just a single occurance, of an engine over-speed on the motor. Voila! Warranty Voided!).

I'm a simple hack, I do software for a living. If this has occured to me, you think it escaped the Factory SW / Firmware developers? I believe it's in there...

cheers mate i can also say the salesman
Shane Welch did most of the kms on her cause the rest of the staff were a bit pissed that he road it all the time ,home aswell & they couldn't take it for a run,so i know who did the most vital first Kays on her!!
