First and second gear wheelies
03/18/14 7:51 AM

I have been practicing my launches. I can get my clutch out quick and maintain around 4000rpm. I'm pretty pleased with this. when I start to spool up I am pulling power wheelies when I get to my power band and shift point. Is there a technique I should be using in the lower gears that will get me down the track into the next gear without having to come out of the throttle? I don't want to short shift unless that's what I need to be doing. Any advice would be great.

FYI, those are lowering straps for the front end, they'll help keep the weight lower and more forward. Not sure how lowering the rear helps too but lots of drag racers get lowering links for the rear as well.

A longer swingarm will also help not sure if its necessary with a stock engine though and I'm sure there's lots of other people on the forum that can give you better advice.

Part of learning is researching. Teach a man to fish? You see? There's no one quicker here at stock wheelbase. Better advice from others? Hmmm.... Maybe so... Wheelie control is clutch and throttle control. That front end strap that our friend pointed out keeps your front end from becoming a "slide hammer". The front of the bike builds momentum in an upward direction as the bike accelerates hard. When the forks run out of travel guess what happens? Whack the top and transfer energy... Snatch the front up maybe? Lowering the rear is for those who seek maximum acceleration at the cost of cornering. See OP's avatar? Does he like to corner? Maybe... Will he speak up and let us know? Probably... Longer swingarm? See above...

A set of window links and a strap will get to the track but let you go street riding after a quick adjustment. controling the wheelie is about getting the wheel speed up and using the clutch and throttle. Practice and and listening to a dude like Mav will get you there. By the way i love a stock wheelbase fast ass bike!

I'm staying stock wheelbase because i love to tear up my buddies who think owning an S1000RR makes them the canyon carving kings. Front Strap???? Maybe. I have been doing my due diligence and most statements say to get the clutch out and maintain revs around 4000 - 5000. I am getting a good launch but when i hit the power band up she pops. I didn't know if I should be rolling out of it at the top of the revs or shifting a little earlier. I want to be quick and controlled..... but mainly Quick!

Leave at 3500 and NEVER short shift. Throttle control if you need to settle it down. The trick is knowing when your front tire is a few inches off the ground. That is before it has a chance to make you chop the throttle too hard.

So I need to work on the "FEEL" as I come into the power band and adjust throttle. I do have a tendency to chop the throttle when the front gets fairly high. Back to practicing! My rear tire is going to hate me!

This is what it takes to extract maximum acceleration. To the tune of about three full packs and a few single fiber and steels along the way each racing season.

For practice I like to find a secluded spot and use what I ride on the street. Here is why, street tires, not as sticky, my cornering suspension set-up: horrible for launching.
What all that does is not only make it harder for me to get a good crisp launch, the tires lose traction sooner. This helps because: when tires lose adhesion sooner: ie, hook up less, they do so more predictably. To get fast and hard on that launch, ya gotta have that 'feel'. I practice that feel, that 'slip-grip-slip-grip' in situations where I have to pay CLOSE HARD attention to all of it because my traction threshold is lower. This allows a degree of forgivability (launching with max grip is hard on clutches see!). The more grip, the more important that line becomes between slip and grip. The practice in regular conditions giving a knowledge of that 'feel', those stages of slip and grip. Then, when ya hit the track, lowered and strapped, with the launch tire mounted, you are intimately familiar with the stages of grip loss and wheelie and cam etc. important to note: of course practice as much as you can at the track. But it gets expensive! Shinko is our friend.

Maverick is one of, if not THE fastest hot shot throttle jockey that I know. Every thing he says here about launch is gospel in my humble opinion. He got there through practice. Remember also, fast isn't just a weekend thing. Maverick is in top physical shape. He stays that way for a reason. He is young, aggressive, confident. He lives fast 24 hours a day. All the stages of a fast launch require certain things physically. Hand eye co-ordination, reflexes, strength, agility, flexibility, focus, concentration. If you eat right and stay in shape, ur more flexible, reflexes are better, focus is sharper. If you work out, the strength in your arms and back and legs is greater in proportion to the machine that you have to control. You aren't 'biting off more than you can chew' when it comes to hustling that bike down the track. Your control is better, your consistency grows, your times drop, all of a sudden, fast is every day. Fast is a habit. Speed is a way of life. How bad do ya want it. The rabbit hole to speed is endless, addicting, intoxicating, and never ending. And it is worth every second put into it. What the human being can do when focus on welding mind to the machine is applied, is miraculous. Ask anyone that lines up against Mav! :))
