Throttle Sticks in open position
08/24/12 10:02 AM

Has this happened to anyone else?

Here is what happened...

I rode yesterday with no problems with the throttle. I parked the bike in the garage around 4:30PM, like I always do. This morning I pulled the bike out of the garage and parked at the street and went to start it. As I was hitting the start button the bike didn't start normally. Then I re-hit the start button while twisting the throttle. As the bike started, I released the throttle and the engine RPM's stayed at 3ooo. The throttle did not "roll-off" like it should. I had to physically roll the throttle back off. I felt the throttle was "sticking" as I rolled the throttle off. I played with the throttle a few times and could fell the throttle getting stuck as I rolled it on and off but it would still not roll-off by it's self. I played with the adjusting threads on the down side of the throttle cable but that didn't help out. I stopped trouble shooting the problem because I had to leave for work. I parked the bike back in the garage and now she's waiting for me to pull her apart and dig into this.

Any help would be great!

Check your throttle cables at the left side inserts. Also check the cable clearance as they pass down and over the engine front(top). There should be a metal clip on the cable ends at the left side throttle shaft. That needs to be in there. You MAY just need to lube your cables...hopefully.

Thanks Grn14! I'll do that when I get home. Oh, what should I use to lube the cables with?

I would use a non-liquid lubricant.Something with a spray nozzle and tube...that'll 'dry' as it's in there. You will need a cable luber. As per the manual.I think you can buy them in Autoparts stores...but not sure. These cables(in my experience)are a real pain to lube using one of those tools.Something about the top end of the cable...but I can't remember just now what it was that was a problem.I never DID get my tool to work right...something about the cable end configuration or something. It may be as simple as a light grease coat on the throttle tube at the grip....you could try that first.See if that'll free it up.You haven't by some chance 'moved' your grip 'position' have you?Like slid the grip in farther towards the housing?Might want to check that as well...before ya go all crazy with the other stuff.

Could be throttle cables but mine does that on very hot weather because of after market stuff I have on teh bar ends expand and contact the throttle tube grip. Easy to fix just loosen the stuff up and give it some room.

Try this
VVVVV
THROTTLE CABLES CLEAN AND LUBE

I think I bough the lube and cable lube/cleaner tool from Dennis Kirk. They sell those things all over the net if you want to google.

Well, I took the bar end off and played with the tube. Not much happened there. I pulled the grip off the tube and voila. The damn thing works. Look Like the grip was getting in the way of the bar end or just getting stuck on the tube. I put the grip back on and it works just fine...for now.

Thanks for all the advice

And I didn't use WD40 or any lube.

I went with aftermarket gel grips and have the same issue. I use a cable lube set up to lube the cables often (I ride in rain....,alot) I actually like the slight drag from the grip as a weak ass throttle lock set up for touring....,
