Do these things really work or is it a waste of money? I have read that at wide open throttle the timing is NOT retarded. Therefore to me it wouldn't make any sense to buy one of these unless they made a huge difference. Let know some input please.

The tre is a limp map maker. It triggers the backup in the digital.. DFI is, "Digital fuel injection." YOu think it's all spiffy hot HP difference, but it more richens up for safe riding the limper home. Safe mode means rich/fat you down. Not rich, hot rod city. It more limps or makes the bike lag a little.
Does it raise the subs on the limp? No. It is so limp, you would not be able to move but ride real slow in a lagging limp to the extreme. If you had the subs removed, then no problem being limp. You sort of over rode the lag of the subs by removing them.
Imagine if you read that you have to remove the subthrottles for the tre to work. Well, what that tells me is the limp is on. What that tells me is if one limp happens in a safe, shut the HP down, then the other tre will also limp the other wire, and so forth you keep hacking the sensors.
This minor controversy will go back and forth if we never heard the tre but discussed the subthrottles being better in than out or better out than in. It is more something one would have to experience. But if you run multi-limps to see what the heck everyone is talking about, that multi-limp toggle throw is the ultimate limp mode, It [the bike] cannot get out of it's way, it slowed down and lost the better analog tune. The digital coded tune on your dash with the gear indicator missing and the safety start compromised if you see the N on the dash being permanent is not the way to go, IMO.

As of 2008 the bikes ECU no longer lags in opening the subthrottles like the 06-07 models. A TRE is truly unnecessary and according to Hub, undesirable. If you don't spend much time below 3k RPM you may not notice any benefit at all. Those who do say it is slight.
