Spam Issue / Resolution
12/26/16 12:36 PM

Hi BG,
I can't speak for anyone else here but if its a matter of finance, I would be willing to throw a few dollars your way if it meant properly setting up infrastructure to stop these spamming cock suckers impacting our forum/site.
I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one.
Maybe worth looking into?

Thanks for the offer. I'm afraid it would cost more than a few dollars to modify the programming to stop this. We had a thread some years ago where someone suggested that members could make donations to help with the site maintenance and hosting costs. It didn't raise much -- not worth the trouble really. I suspect that there aren't many here who would be willing to contribute. Alas...

Maybe when I get some free time, I can spend some time on it myself. -bg

Well, I'll throw in a few but if there's a way I or anyone else can just access the forum membership and delete spammers, I'd rather do that for ya. Could guaranty a spam sweep every 24 hours at least.

How much are we talking to modify the program? hundreds or thousands?

There may be an easy solution. Two of the spammers from this morning were from China and Russia. I found and set up a service that will block visitors to the website by country, and I set it up to block visitors from both of these countries. We'll see how it goes. I can easily block other countries if need be. -bg

Second that. Your spam elimination is more than adequate, bg. I'd even call it downright convenient but SHEEZE what a PITA it must be for you. I've used this forum an awful lot over the years. If there's ever anything I can do to help, please just let me know.

BTW, bg...any idea what this thing is? I see it at the lower right of my forum page. Never noticed that before.

Says, "PROTECTED AND ACCELERATED BY INCAPSULA" when you mouse over it. I presume this has something to do with you?

I was scared I had a virus for a minute.

That's the service that's keeping users from China and Russia out of our site. I don't see what you are describing from here. What browser are you using? -bg

Safari.

I see a small shield with something that looks like a blue wall on it in the lower right corner.

I am using Chrome, Windows 10, and the image Rook mention is the same thing I see:

I see it as well using the latest version of IE on Windows 8.1. As long as it protects us from Chinese and Russian spammers, I don't care.

Thanks, guys.

I see it once in a while with several browsers now.

It seems to be working. 85 visitors from China and Russia have been turned away in less than 24 hours. -bg

Don't want to speak too soon but since setting up the new service, we haven't seen any unwanted emails coming through and I haven't had to delete tons of unwanted spam notifications from this forum.
Great improvement BG.
Thanks...
