Anybody ridden one? Can you compare the power in anyway to the 14R?

Last year I was considering trading my 14R for either a superduke or a Ducati Diavel ( The regular Diavel, I hate the new Diavel X )

I have never test ridden one, but I love the superDuke ( I did test ride the Diavel and it was "meh...." Not me)

But I'm not really a set upright, two cylinder kind of guy (lol)

I rode one last year. It was like a big dirtbike on steroids. Perfect low-speed fueling and a total beast when wound out. I would have my license about a month if I had one. I only rode on city streets, so I can't really comment on handling except to say it felt light and precise.

As I was climbing on, the salesman said, "Now I have only one request; Don't fuck with the wheelie control." I said, "Man, I don't know anything about that shit, I just want to ride it." I got on a deserted back street and Hammered it coming away from a stop sign. It came up to a perfect 45-degree wheelie and stayed there for a block until I let off.

My only gripes were no carrying capacity and no wind protection. I anxiously await the opportunity to test ride the Superduke 1290 GT. I may have to get a second mortgage.

I've also ridden a Diavel and although it has a great motor, suspension and brakes, the low-speed handling was like a wheelbarrow. The huge back tire tries to steer the front and you have to steer it like a 3-wheeler.

Duke might be rated @ 103lb-tq. 14 is rated @ 120 torque. No, former world's fastest is still faster. Nothing beats the king but another king with a better rider.

The 1290 is carrying 70+kg less than the 14 so I'll wager it'll take the 14 on fast getaways but the superior aerodynamics of the 14 will claw back the defecit when you reach 3 figure speeds to give a much higher top speed. The Duke will almost certainly smoke the 14 through the twisties. Wouldn't want to do a 500+ mile day on one though!! JMO

V-twins produce a different sort of power compared to inline 4s. My old ZZR 12 FELT like it had more power than my ZX-14, but it didn't. I'm sure the ZX-`14 or especially the ZX-14R could romp on a 1290 in the 1/4 or on a top speed run. In he real world, it would depend upon conditions. The 1290 would leave a 14 for dead at Deal's Gap or the Arkansas end of The Talimena. Same thing for Pike's Peak or any tight mountain pass. 162bhp and 425 lbs or 190 bhp and 560 lbs?

HAha-I believe this is the bike I met in the twisties last fall and the guy was slipping away from me in the tight corners while I was riding beyond my limits to keep up. When we got to the main road, the tables turned. He was flogging it but I could have overtaken him quite easily. Seemed like he hit top speed about 120 mph. IDK what Ducati it was but it was a similar model to the Superduke. Maybe somewhat smaller. Maybe ~8 years old.

I had a 1198SP prior to the 14. Big twins have an explosive, off throttle punch that IL4's joust don't. My previous R1 felt tame by comparison but when the R1 was wound up it had the legs. A naked bike like the 1290 will hit an air wall around 150mph which the slippery 14 will romp through. JMO

Agree on the twisties and the aero comments. You really don't want to be on the Superduke over 150, with the wind last trying to tear your head off. The ZX will blow by at that speed.

The big v-twin is super strong down low, and eagerly revs out, but not like the big inline four. Apples and oranges, for sure.

Was probably an 620 Mulitstrada. I guarantee a 1200 Multi wouldn't have run out of steam at 120. I ran one up to 115 on a test ride and it had plenty of steam left. The guy (salesman) riding with me was on a 1200 Streetfighter, which was similar to the Monster. 1200 Multis are geared to run 150-155

Never ridden a KTM or Duc V-twin, so can't comment on those. But if they're similar to my previous Honda RC51's V-twin, yes it revved very quickly from low RPM, straight on thru to redline, but I actually learned I didn't really care for that. There's something exciting about winding up an inline 4 toward the top where it makes increasing power, 'kinda' similar to a 2-stroke. I've posted before about the on-rush that seems to occur on the big ZX at something like 110 ... like you were already haulin' ass at 100 or 110, and then some kinda boost kicked in and shoves your eyeballs back in your head and makes you have to squeeze the frikkin grips to hang on for dear life.

In other words, I found the V-twin's flat power curve kinda boring. Also, it hit redline very fast, kinda too fast ... which sounds like a good thing ... but my take on it is that I felt like I couldn't enjoy full throttle acceleration very long before having to shift again, and again and again.

Those are a couple more of my two cents.

Hondas (sporting v-twins and I-4s) are known for needing to have their necks wrung to make power. KTM and last-gen Ducatis are known for torque throughout the powerband. Not so much the new Panigale motor, which is more like the RC51 in that it needs to be revved to make power.

This... I'm hoping the GT has a bit better cockpit air and wind management than the 1290R.

Just buzzing through posts here (honestly just trying to find a sign of the non-existent Gen3 ZX14R) and I just commented on another thread about the new 2017 KTM 1290 Super Duke GT.

I will be demo riding one at the local Katoom dealer in a few weeks when it arrives, and judging by everything I've read and seen, it's the culmination of nearly everything I want for a street bike. Torque monster, factory luggage, heated grips and seat, cruise control, semi-active suspension, and adjustable wind protection. All in a trellis framed chassis full of top shelf components... Brembo M50 calipers, stainless lines, single sided swingarm, 6+ gallon gas tank, etc.

Check it out, whether or not you've bought another 14R, it'd be worth a test ride!

This has been my dream bike ever since I happened upon it on YouTube a few months ago. I feel exactly as you about it being the culmination of everything I would want in a motorcycle and The Sound is Pure Sex!
