RAM Mounts and accessories
04/16/11 7:54 PM

Snow = PMS (as I read on another thread, PMS = Parked Motorcycle Syndrome)

So with some time on my hands and the bikes in the garage...

The dash of a 14 is limited in space and I needed to get a little creative to add my handheld Garmin 62S GPS, my Kodak Playsport HD camcorder, and my radar detector. I opted for a RAM mirror mount, arm, and cradle for my GPS, a few various RAM arms and 2 mirror mounts for the camcorder in different locations, and a home made bracket and high strength Velcro for the hardwired radar detector.

This pic is of the dash with everything attached.

This pic is of the RAM mirror mounts I added to the underside of the bars. I simply bolted them on with a M8 bolt in to the bottom of the clip-on threaded hole. Very strong and hidden but took a lot of looking around to discover this option.

This pic is another RAM mirror mount on the rear exhaust hanger for a different camera angle if desired.

This pic is of my DIY bracket to get the radar detector above the guages and still under the windscreen. Just a bent up peice of plate steel painted. There is an empty M6 threaded hole up there that came in handy.

The RAM mounts are great and very interchangable. I can move or remove the camera in 30 seconds. The GPS cradle fits excellent. I can move my radar detector between my truck and bike (RAM mount in my truck for that). All done relatively inexpensive at under $100 (for mounts) and I can add a RAM ball anywhere else I need one for $10.

The GPS and Camera are fully waterproof but not the radar detector, that's why I wanted it well under the windscreen. I also wanted the radar detector as close to my normal line of sight as possible to be sure I don't miss an alert. With everything mounted and me sitting normally all the factory gauges are still in full view.

For the really nasty downpours I have heard of guys using a small shower cap to cover their detectors. I plan on carrying one just in case.

All together it's a bit much for me too, I prefer a cleaner look. My thoughts are if I'm going to take it with me, it may as well be mounted correctly and easy to access safely. The GPS is handy when out exploring and has a neat dashboard feature that can show average speed, max speed, compass, altitude, etc. The camera is more for group rides and such, the radar detector will be there most of the time.
No tools and 20 seconds and they're off.

Nice setup! Wish I had seen this a couple years ago!

+1 on RAM mounts. I opted for the stem mount years ago and later got a blinker control switch mount when I added a Scotts damper. I added at that time a weather proof AC adapter to the left of the gauges in the dimpled area.

hey that's a neat location for that adapter. I haven't found a weather proof adapter that is full size that I like yet. Where did you find yours?

I have one just like it...look somewhere like Bass Pro(where I got mine) in the marina section.

Hey Mak, I am trying to do the same setup for the Radar Detector and find that it almost completly obscures my view of the LCD screen. How did you get around that on yours? If I keep the detector level to the ground it covers the screen or I can tip it so that the sensors are now pointed at the ground which lets me see a bit of the Screen. All in all, not a big deal as I can still see my speedo and Tach just fine. Also that M6 Bolt works great!
