Swingarm extensions and sprockets
03/29/12 10:01 PM

I'm thinking hard about stretching my bike along with more upgrades for the summer. I want it longer than stock but not long enough to decrease performance of the bike. my question is how safe is swingarm extensions? As for sprockets goes I have vortex in my sights. Does anyone use them? if so how reliable are they. I read on another site that they have to be replaced every 8-10k miles

i just put a vortex 43t on mine this yr have only got a couple rides in but i think I'm loving it lol i finally can use 6th gear now. I only put the vortex on because i got a great deal on it and just wanted to see how id like it for this summer only, then i will be replacing chain and sprockets with supersprox i think these bikes just have too much torque for anything aluminum,

as far as the extensions I've often thought about them, so ill be watching this thread for the comments. one thing i don't understand is the price range on them I've seen em in the $100-$300 range but of course then its another $200 for a chain lol

I have extensions on mine and I'm at 64" wheelbase so right about 6" over. Adding the extensions raises the rear mine is between 1/8 & 3/16" higher and regardless what all the naysayers will try to tell you the bike handles better now than it did before I stretched it. I think most of the people that say they ruin the handling have never touched a stretched bike. I have not lowered mine at all yet but if you lower the front you need to get a modified oil pan or you will run the risk of bottoming out and destroying your oil pan. As far as the sprocket I run supersprox and if you buy the package from them with "lifetime" warranty they replace it once for free.

A longer wheelbase cannot NOT affect the handling. The longer it is the heavier the turn in, wider the turn arc, yadda yadda.

Whats the best sprocket setup? is it true that swingarm extensions are only for show?

I would suggest buy the extensions and see how you like it before you invest in a swingarm if you decide you want the arm instead you can sell the extensions and recoop 75% of your money easily. I'm just running stock gearing because I do a lot of long road trips and don't want to lose any fuel economy.

The setup that I really want is a 2-3"over swingarm with a factory widen 240 wheel. Does anyone know where of a good place where I can find that at for a reasonable price?

With that kit you would have to still buy tire, chain, brake line, plate bracket... before going 240 you might want to price tires I'm not sure what is out there for 240.

here are some other kits Thompson custom cycles
