Anything you don't like about the 14R?
05/07/14 7:55 AM

The 2 things so far that I dont like are the complete absence of storage space under the seat. Even my 05 10R had a little area for a hat or something. Also the buzzing behind the speedo/tach area around 4k rpm is getting on my nerves. I pulled the tip sensor and filled it with mineral oil, and it reduced it quite a bit, but it's still there.

I don't have any buzzing at all in that area bud, is it comin from a loose fastener? Or is it simply that cosmetic plastic piece that sits behind the windscreen?

Not having any storage space I'm kinda used too. Usually just grab my tank bag if I'm needing to bring more than sunglasses.

It's definitely plastic related. I can grab to windscreen and give it a slight tug to stop the buzzing

Nope. Not a thing. Love every bit of the bike. You don't buy sport bikes for their luxurious storage capabilities. That's why they make tank bags.

Your complaints are irrelevant. Your rattle is prob a loose bolt. That shit happens on brand new machines. Find it fix it. No mo problems.

I've tightened up every bolt that I can get to with no luck. My 05 10R had the same noise in the same location, and it turned out to be the fairing was rubbing on the cluster frame. I fixed it by strategically placing some thin pieces of Styrofoam in between.

Hey nasty, I got a tip on that storage problem. I took out my little toolbox under my seat when I sent my ECU to get "Blasted" and didn't put it back in. It actually opens up a decent amount of storage for some little things. I know I'm without those tools now but I like having that little bit of storage.

Yea, did the "hump" mod on the busa, it was kinda nice to have that little storage ...
But oh well, that's why I bought a nice backpack, it even has a thing to put an extra helmet
On if you are going to pick someone up who doesn't already have a helmet ....

pull off your windscreen and you will see a wire right behind your gauge cluster. zip tie it off and no more buzzing.

I have that buzzing as well. I did not have it on my other 14 ( 2013 model ). I wish there was a little room for storage also. I have removed the tool kit so I at least have room for a disc lock now. It would be nice if the U.S. models had the levers beside/below the seat that flipped out so there would be an anchor point for a cargo net. Minor things I know. But over all, I love this bike!

I remove the tail piece seat cover and add a cargo net. Never ride without the net; It has four plastic hooks: front two fit over the square (rectangular) bars under the seat on each side/ actually 'click' as they fasten over the square channels: rear plastic hooks get folded under the tailpiece and attach to the side reflector mounts very tightly and without touching the plastic due to the knots in the net at the hook attachment point.

I almost never have to take the net off; just grab it and pull it up to slide cargo under it. That, plus a magnetic tank bag and I'm good to go for short runs or day runs. Overnighters require a tail bag and /or soft saddle bags.
These bags on the tail or the saddlebags are good for day trips and trips to the range as well. Or to pick up a few beverages and snacks for the game on the telly. I use the license plate mounts for attaching the saddle bags in the rear and I know that won't work for (most of) you with the replacement plate mount.

What I don't like about the bike is its weight. That's about it. The rest is all good and better all round IMO than any other bike on the market! Now if I could have a stable, that would be another story and I could say I didn't like this or that focussed area of application in comparison to say a track bike or a power cruiser or a transcontinental tourer, etc. But overall, its the cats pajamas! (don't overthink that expression, its older than most all of us! heh, heh)

Egregious tire wear.

The squeak you're hearing is your screen rubbing the front fairing. Remove your screen and look for white powder or rub marks at the interface. Some thin rubber applied on both sides of the mounting holes eradicates this noisome foible.

The 'clunk' when shifting from neutral to first, especially before the bike is fully warmed-up.

My buzzing around that RPM was my windscreen. Tightened bolts a little more and buzzing gone!

The clunk into first has been a thing on entry bike I've ever owned. No big deal. I'm going to have to chase down that fairing buzz myself. Can't really hear it with earplugs in though. My only complaint is that I can't ride it year round!

Seems like most people that have commented have the "buzz" going on around the wind screen and instrument area as well. For me, I don't think it's the screen. The dealership seems to have tightened that down well. I don't know at this point . I will be putting a Puig screen on it in the next few days. When I do I will look at some of the possible causes mentioned by the members here.

This was a complaint with the old 14. Some of us put washers under the bolts that fasten the TOS. The TOS had spacers that the fasteners ran through and the spacer was a bit too long to allow the screw to hold the parts together tightly.

The TOS has oil?

My only complaints:

1 - Thieves like it, Insurance went up because of it. +90 a year lol.

2 - ABS not available on a 2012 in the USA. I would have gotten it.

3 - Have to take the seat off for helmet security. My friends fz1 has a locked holder just under the tail.

4 - Battery access, Have to take almost the whole damn bodywork off to get at it.

5 - OEM cans are too damn big.

6 - Lack of storage.

That's really it. Most of these are minimal complaints, and the others Ive found a work around.

I wish it was more of a popular class so we can get more updated models like the ZX10 every 9-10 years is just too long for them to remodel it!

Rook, the tip sensor isnt filled with oil from the factory, but a common fix to remedy the buzzing noise from it is to pull it apart and put some mineral oil in it. Like I stated earlier, it toned down alot of the buzzing noise but not all of it.

Also I know for 100% certain that my windscreen screws are all tight, and the plastic washers are accounted for. I'll try zip tieing up the harness like mentioned in an earlier post. Thanks fellas!
