gear wearing habits
03/31/15 1:56 PM

Just curious as to how many people DON'T wear full gear every single time you fire up. I know alot of people that will wear full gear on a fast ride, but will go out half protected on a trip to work, store, ect. To me it makes no sense because you can go down at any time, and for any reason. Thoughts?

Kevlar Jeans, good textile jacket, Alpinestar half boots, and DOT/SNELL helmet
at the very LEAST, every time ...

Full Dainese leather pants, and full leather jacket on the rare occasion that it
gets cold ....

Admittedly, I didn't start wearing everything till a friend went down in blue jeans, tennis shoes, Textile jacket and gloves, and carbon fiber AGV helmet. The only part of his body that escaped road rash was his head. The gloves and jacket wore through in a split second, and you can only guess what happened to the blue jeans. It's been 4 months now, and he's still in the hospital going through therapy.

After his accident and seeing first hand what can happen by not wearing all gear, I ordered the alpine stars SMX plus boots and A10-airflow pants to match my alpine stars leather jacket, gloves, and shoei RF-1100. I will not ride without all of it no matter what.

I rarely wear adequate gear. If I did, I couldn't ride to work and it would be downright impractical to ride most other places. When it's cool, I wear a leather jacket when it's warm I wear textile and when it's hot I wear mesh. If it's really hot and I'm commuting I wear a t shirt and shorts but I on;y do that about 2 times /year. I always weara helmet and cheap gloves. If I'm doing some heavy duty sport riding, I'll wear everything you see in the avatar. That's not real frequent. I wish it was. Hope I can ride more this summer than last.

I always ride with Leather or Mesh(Vanson) jacket. Jeans or leather pants depending on temp, Sidi boots and Gauntlet gloves and helmet. I also just upgraded my back pads to Forcefield armor.

Also must admit, when I was young and dumb, I thought I was bullet proof so t shirt and shorts was common. However now not so young and hopefully a little wiser. During summer and heavy traffic I Still wear a t shirt or thin jacket with jeans and Shark helmet. If its Sunday morning breakfast run then its riding pants, boots and Lookwell jacket and obviously helmet. It's the law here.

That brings up another valid point. Here in Texas, you can ride without a helmet, but don't get caught not wearing a seat belt. Yea that makes perfect sense.

RE: gear wearing habits

I have winter, transitional, and summer gear.

Summer is toughest on me, and winter is easiest, around Tucson AZ.

It's easy to add good gear to the kit. It's harder to be well protected and not over-heated, dripping wringing soaking wet.

But yeah, all the time every time all the gear. No excuses accepted. Sorry seen too much shit I dont wanna remember. Folks that forget to wear good gear sometimes have not seen much, sometimes forget what they have seen. Folks that remember what they seen usually remember to not wind up that way, and take steps to assure that they dont.

Lost another two guys here in town just this week. Yeah, just this week.

One guy helping a friend fix his sports bike. I think they finished the work, and he rode it for checkout. No gear on... Drove it into and through a house and now dead.

Other guy just last nite on the only freeway thru town. No details why yet, but he's dead.

I beleive there are worse things than dying. A trip through the morgue is quieter than a trip thru the hospital truama ward.

Yeah, go ahead, forget about that good gear you got stashed in the corner waiting for ya to put it on. You go right ahead...

OK, sorry. I had no idea this had affected me so much. I'm like I just got a 2x4 between the eyes...

Exactly my point. After seeing my friends wounds and how it affected every aspect of his life, his two young children, and his wife. Never again will I go out without it all on.

Dependant on where I'm riding, the weather (dont care how hot or cold it is), and for how long, I will ALWAYS kit up in a combination of the gear I own.
Funny thing is I have always done this with no exceptions and can't get onto a bike without full gear or I feel naked and vulnerable.

Kit I own includes

3 x Shoei X-12 helmets (Daijiro red, Daijiro blue and Kagayama blue)
3 x Alpinestars MX-1 leather jackets (black,red and blue)
1 x Alpinestars textile armored jacket (red black and white)
1 x Alpinestars leather track pants (black that match up with my black MX-1 jacket)
1 x Alpinestars black leather touring pants
1 x kevlar Dragging jeans
6 x Alpinestars GP Pro leather gloves (red x 2, black x 1, black and white x 1, and blue x 2)
1 x Alpinestars black Supertech R race boots
1 x Sidi black and red Vertigo race boots
An assortment of extras that go with this main kit

Pretty sure I have it covered...

And people not wearing helmets, whether it's law or not?
Lunacy...

I heard there was a rally somewhere in the US where riders took to the streets on their bikes without helmets protesting about what they said were draconian helmet laws in their state.
One guy wrecked, was killed, and afterwards the coroner advised he would probably still be alive today had he been wearing a helmet!

People never cease to amaze me...

ATGATT. Period.

I certainly vary my gear for the conditions, but I'm always geared up head-toe. Full race suit and comparable boots/gloves for the track. On aggressive street rides it's 2-piece zip together leathers with same boots and gloves. When I'm commuting I've got some comfier (but still high protection) boots and gloves with a zip-together textile suit. I have more helmets than I know what to do with. One to match each type of riding.

I have so much riding gear to choose from it's nuts.

Street, warm-hot weather:
Speed & Strength 2-piece drag suit, Sidi boots.

Street, warm-hot weather where I can't change clothes at my destination:
Leather Jacket, Icon Jeans, Sidi boots.

Street, cooler weather or rain:
Aerostich Roadcrafter, Sidi boots.

Dirt, warm-hot weather
Compression suit, knee/shin guards, Sidi Crossfire boots, MX jersey/pants/gloves

Dirt, cooler weather or rain
Aerostich Roadcrafter, Sidi Crossfire boots

Shoei helmets for all occasions (they're what fit my head best).

I have ridden in shorts and a t-shirt exactly once. I felt like a fish out of water. Never again.
