Started engine without coolant
08/28/12 8:23 PM

I just got a new engine in my 14,started it and
Let it run about 20 sec. Got it home from the shop
And my nieghbor came over and I fired it and gassed
It lightly...shut it down
Haven't got any coolant in it yet??
I was researching the bleeder lines route
Off the radiator tonight and seen a post where
It's major damage to the water pump if ran without
Coolant!! It's run probably 30 sec. Without
Coolant .... No coolant yet because I wanted to
Research proper burping of the system.
That cost me a BMW head gasket not getting all
The air out of the system.
Wanted to know if anybody was aware
Of this or not??

Its true. The coolant lubricates the pump seal.

I doubt any harm was done. The seal at the impeller is lubricated with coolant but the pump itself is driven from the oil pump shaft. The inboard side of the water pump literally sits in oil.

There is a weep hole on the underside of the pump which will forewarn you of impending failure should the seal have been compromised.

Thanks for posting! Only a hunch but I would doubt there would be any damage after such a brief run.

This is how it turned out....the coolant
Was leaking from someplace and in my panic
I figured oh crap...the pump. After ordering a
Pump. I checked it real good and found the bleeder
Hose was leaking on the water pump.
It's hard when you've got a 16 month old
Running off with your tools and a 6 year old asking
What and why with every nut n bolt...so I should
Of trouble-shoot every line and clamp before
I jumped to conclusions. Good news is its up and
Running with no knocks or issues now.
I'm wondering though this motor had 300 miles
On it and no history to me of break in procedures
So where should I begone with that..??

Ride it like you stole it. Don't listen to break in procedures unless that is going to bring you peace of mind. My mind is at ease better knowing I did a race engine break in. Broke in the 14 nice and easy/book. Busa was redlined out the showroom door /motoman. Both run good but the 14 uses some oil. Go figure.

Hey rook
Been awhile...remember you really helped me out
With all my stupid azz Qs when I bought the first 14

I did some research on it later after posting this and
Been really busy at work...so I'm late replying But if your don't run up your
RPMs on a fresh motor (not redlines) but hit it hard every
Now and then on a short ride your cylinder walls
Will glaze up and your rings don't seat right!!
You may already know this but I sure didn't
Only one way to fix glazed cylinders....tear it down
I believe you about your buss break in...only way to
Go

...only way I will break in a sport bike ever again. Can't say for certain if it's best burt I can't live with wondering. As you said, there is no way to redo it unless you re-hone and re-ring.
