Too Red
06/08/11 1:33 PM

Hi guy`s,
Picked up a leftover 2010 ZX14 still breaking it in. The black 2011 got sold and the dealer could`nt locate a black one locally but gave me an ok deal on a new 2010 with a 3 year warranty. Not crazy about the color (sorry Red guy`s) but
it`s too red for me. Hope to get it painted soon or maybe winter project. It is so hard to keep the rpms 4000 max
but I am sure good things come to those who wait! got about 350 miles so far. Just wanted to pipe in and say hi to everyone.

HOWDY!!!Maybe you'll get to likin it more once yer able to get out there and really roll. You could always switch some bodywork for a different color scheme ya know?Maybe find a good contrasting color deal.My 07 Plasma Blue bodywork was fine...but to me,it was a bit TOO much blue.Changed my lowers for CF.Really made a big difference in visual perception of the overall bike.Had stock 06 Black on there before that.

Welcome..enjoy...you're wise to hold off on hammering yer new engine IMO.Oil change at 500 miles...that's what I would recommend(not that you asked)! And again at 1000 at the minimum.Full syn 10/40 at the THIRD oil change. My baby's got 44,000 hard miles...fast miles.Engine's stronger and better than when she was new..like yours.Went by the book(the dash sticker). Some long downhill decels would be good as well IMO.Frequent stops...like every 30,40 miles...let er cool down some. Then go again. It's only 1000 miles. It'll go by quicker than you think.I wouldn't thrash yer motor.I'd keep er just as the sticker says.I'd definitely avoid starting her and IMMEDIATELY taking off. Give er a few minutes to circulate some.It won't harm anything. You just might be saving yerself a lot of headaches down the road.Have fun...be careful!(at least till ya get past yer break-in)

yeah its a bugger during the break in period as things only start to get interesting on the zx14 north of 5000 rpm :)

mine continued to surprise me up to about 20,000km. theres a school of thought that says that big block sports tourers only get properly loosend up after about 50,000km.

have fun and welcome mate, your gunna love that bike

Was going to go out riding this weekend, but work called me in for Saturday and Sunday 12 hour days. I believe it suppose to rain up North - Vermont/ New Hampshire area anyway. I was planning to have the summer off from work but
the phone keeps ringing every week. It will stop soon ;)I have`nt rode since Oct 2003 and that was at the track. Been craving riding since. Sold my 02R1 in 2003 when I bought my house. Now I can pick up where I left off.

I had`nt bought the black 2011 one cause it got sold.
I bought the 2010 left over red one. I really wanted a black one but I got $2600
off of a red one. I think with the money I have saved I can paint it black. The red is really nice
in the sun. I have been thinking about graphics I think Blue07 mentioned adding a contrast (thanks)
and I do like the Roaring Toyz red one with the silver/gray over the fins and black striping with yellow
outline. I do still want a black ZX14 but the candy red factory paint is so nicely done I feel guilty painting black
over it. Need more time. Tried to upload a pic... not sure if it worked.

JMHO but I think the red 14 looks great. Out of all the color schemes, I think the flat black grills/red is best. Simple, direct and harmonizes with the shapes of the bike.

I suppose you are at ~ 2K miles now. I doubt it matters very much at all how you break an engine in. I went by the book and have been very happy. After 28.5K miles I have a slow oil leak from head cover but I will be fixing soon as I am finally doing the valve clearance check. New head gasket and the leak should be gone.
