Clutch feel after 600 mile service
06/08/13 11:56 AM

I had the 600 mile service performed this morning. When I rode home it seemed like the clutch had a different feel to it. It's as if the last mm or so of release is a little grabby/mushy. It's as if it hangs a bit...hard to describe. The transmission also feels like it shifts a little more abruptly. I didn't get much time to ride it, just a few miles home. Tomorrow I'll get to wring it out a bit and getting a better sense of things. I was just curious if anybody has had a similar issue/experience.

I just did my 600 miles service today, installed the cox radiator guard, and Rizoma brake/clutch reservoir. No changes noticed on mine.

Air in the master? Zip-tie lever overnight or bleed the master's nipple. One or the other. Chain adjustment can change the way the bike shifts, but not this grabby situation like you think the clutch would break, but your lever has air so it is not disengaging like old. Something like that?

Air in the master? Zip-tie lever overnight

Hubster, I always thought bleeding the brakes by the ziptie the lever deal was an old wives tale but recently tried it on my VTX1300C front brake lever. Cinched it down hard and left it for a week, lever was rock hard afterward and has stayed hard for over a month now so I was amazed. Compared to messing with bleeder nipples and Dot 4 brake fluid spilled all over your bike this is a great tip.

My question, how or why does it work? My theory, you're trapping the air under very high pressure and it being a much smaller molecule than a brake fluid molecule, diffuses past the seal lip in the master cylinder over time without losing any fluid.

Jason, I hear those complaints all the time when bikes are serviced at the stealer, they're tampering with a lot of stuff and some of it might be better left alone. The shifting quality is affected by different oils so if they changed your oil brand that might do it. The clutch is more puzzling, could just be a coincidence that you noticed it after service. After some kind of incident, like the service, we all pay very close attention to details and start noticing things that might have always been there but we never noticed before.

For peace of mind, you might run it back by the dealer and get a list of items they adjusted or tampered with on the service order. Might offer some clues.

I just went back and re-read your initial post, that's a wet clutch and oil type could affect the clutch feel as well. Also, take a look at the oil level, those guys are human and can make mistakes like anyone else.

Thanks for the feedback. They use kawasaki 10w40 and the level is good. I'm going to pop by the dealer next Saturday. I'll also try Hubs tip.

Try the zip tie method, I started a thread on this on ZX-10R.net, everyone agrees it works but no one seems to know why.
