Oil Change Gone Wrong?
06/26/14 7:17 AM

I completed a full oil change today on my 2012 14r and after giving it a short idle of approximately 1 minute to fill the oil filter this is what I saw in the window:

This is the entire process I went through:
-removed drain bolt and filter, allowed to drain (got caught up with a meeting and didn't get back for approximately 4 hours).
-Now completely drained, I poured approx. 400 mL of new oil through reservoir and allowed to come out the drain bolt until flow slowed to a drip.
-Cleaned/replaced drain bolt and torqued to spec in manual (22 ft lb).
-Installed new oil filter and torqued to spec in manual (13 ft lb).
-Poured in 4 L of new oil (stopped when it hit the high line in sight glass).
-turned engine over for 20 secs to fill the filter and drop reservoir level.
-Poured in another 0.6 L of new oil (stopped when level hit center of sight glass).
-Ran engine for about 1 minute to ensure filter was filled completely and re-checked level a few minutes later when oil had drained back to the reservoir.
-Took photo.

New Oil Filter : K&N KN303
New Oil : Mobil 1 4T 10W-40
Ambient temperature was around 15°C (~59°F)

Is this anything to be concerned about? The previous oil never showed anything like this in the sight glass. I've only had the bike for about 2 months (~1500 kms added by me so far) but not knowing the previous oil condition/quality I like the peace of mind knowing exactly what is in my machine, hence the early change.

I appreciate any/all feedback, thanks in advance.

When I went to the meeting, the crankcase was filled with air and the temp was somewhat cold. I warmed up the bike for a few minutes, but not up to running temp. Either my moisture began to mix and I should run the bike more or I'll turn the oil in a milky color.

My next sighting is to find the oil cans, see if they pour out any of that white coating, it's more the oil mix of some old cans sitting and separating the additives?

There is no way I've started a coolant leak and there is a mixing thereof.

1. Oil container: Nope, no separation.
2. Coolant contamination: Nope, my res tank is full and up to the lines.
3. Cold starts: Maybe, just maybe the cold day, the short start, the water [condensation] mix I better ride it longer to dry it out.

Thanks Hub.

You are correct on No.'s 1 & 2, it's almost midnight here so I'll take you up on number 3 and go for a bit of a ride in the morning and see the result.

You bet. Unless I'm missing something, or if the crew can come up with something else; I'm played out.

Here's a racing trick. We do not want the parts to starve without helping the oil to get there faster, so the trick is to fill the oil filter up or prime it in other words. Fill it and walk away. Let the oil soak in the pleats. Top it off so much so when horizontal happens, not much empties out.

yes, I often get that changing oil in low temps. High humidity does not help either. Thats why I do my best to change oil and put the bikes into storage before it gets too cold and damp.

I've had this milky residue plenty of times or I've seen a film of frost develop inside the glass (or both). It goes with cold weather operation. If you give the bike a good long run, the moisture will burn off. Or just run it and it will clear up before long.

I vote for condensation. Run the engine to operating temp.

unless you live in an unusually cold climate. It will clear itself soon. Even on a cold day, a long ride will take care of it. The engine has to get hot for a while is all.

Nothing to worry about, mine looks like milky sludge after it sits all winter. Ends up being more of a fogged up glass than milky oil. Heat it up and it all goes away!

When I checked this morning it was all good, went for a 20 min ride and checked again, all is well. Thanks for the vote of confidence guys, appreciate it.

If that showed up in any of the motors/pumps/turbines at work it would be a little cause for investigation.
