Chain Wax
09/16/11 4:21 PM

Just a little update on the Chain Wax deal.Last night I wiped my chain down just to get the dust and stuff off.Okay...The garage was cool...like 60 degrees. The chain was cold.I reapplied Chain wax on the cold chain. No biggie.Went to ride today....ZERO fling.Guess it CAN be put on a cold chain...but it needs to sit(IDK how long) so the liquid(s) can evaporate.Just thought I'd pass that along for you guys who think you HAVE to reapply right after a ride.I know I did(according to the instructions'[best]to put on a warm chain'.I've definitely been taking better care of this chain than I did previous ones.Still lookin new!VERY happy about how smooth the drivetrain feels with a cared for chain.I mean,I always DID lube my chain before...not as much, and I rarely kerosined the links and all.Way better performance since I've been doing this little 30 minute routine around every 400 miles or so.

blue07; I thought the chain was supposed to be warm to help the wax penetrate, not to prevent fling.

Yep...that's the main reason for having the warm chain...according to them. But the fling deal....that was just something separate.I mentioned the 'cold chain' cause I once put the chain wax on my "cold chain"...and went for a ride.Stuff flew all over the rim.The key for 'no fling' is the evaporation process.Which certainly is longer than...20 minutes They recommend 'overnight'...

BTW...I HATE having to clean 'fling' off my rim.Letting it evaporate for a period of time....that took care of my 'having to have a spotless rim' thing!

this is the reason I have went back to using oil to lub again, after a run out dry cloth takes the crud and dust off, no need to use a grease remover.

I use chain wax too, I forget the brand, its an aerosol. I put it on a warm clean chain when I can arrange it, but like today, before I left OC, I just sprayed the chain the way it was and let it sit for an hour while I finished packing etc. No fling.

When I take it off the road for winter, I'll clean the chain with kerosene and a brush really good, and heat it with a shrink gun, and give it a good shot of chain wax and it will be good until the next spring.

Chain wax is good stuff.

A couple minutes with a hair dryer or heat gun is all you need to warm up the chain enough. Starting with a warm chain speeds up the evaporation.

...but I can't help but think about volitile fumes from propellant getting sucked into a hot, glowing heat element.

IMHO, blow before if you have too. After, I think you may be asking for trouble.

It's not quite THAT extreme Rookster. The dryer does work nicely though! I use mainly to evaporate the Kerosine(what little there is after wiping down good).THEN apply the wax.

I've just obtained an actual heat tubing shrink gun, it is tiny but kicks out incredible heat. Going to use that to warm the chain up prior to spraying the wax on.

Got it because when I install the Denali v2 driving lights, they are going down near the front axle, on the brackets which hold the reflector. So the wiring which has to come all the way up to the dash is all going in a shrink tube and then I'm going to cook it tight.

Will make it easier to route/tie and look better too.

Lots of use for shrink gun, but not drying your hair, it would catch your hair on fire lol.

you guys are going to blow something up.

Riding the bike gets the chain pretty warm if the weather is not cold. I like to wash my chain with kerosene after a good ride. the motor gets hot and keeps the chain warm. The goop comes out of the cracks better than when cold. Then I wipe it good and go for another ride to fling the remaining kerosene out. There will be enough left over oil from the kerosene to keep the chain lubed for a 20, 30 minute ride. Chain is hot again, engine hot again. Apply chain lube of your choice and let sit for a few hours at least.

For 30 years or more I have followed King Kenny Roberts and used PJ1. I use White Spirit after every 2/300 miles or more if it has pi**ed it down and clean the chain using cloth soaked in the stuff. I run the bike out for 30 or so miles and put it back on the paddock stand to apply liberal coat of PJ1. I get virtually no fling and have no mess cleaning the bike with oil splatter etc. In a previous life I rode motorcycle speedway semi pro.. To get the best chain life back then we took the chain off every race, washed it in petrol, then boiled it in HMP grease in a tray over a gas cylinder. Ive had big Kwak's since 1981 and used PJ1 on them all, in c.250,000 miles on Z1000; GPZ900R; ZX10; ZX9R; ZX12R and now a 14 I have never needed a new chain and come to think of it rarely adjusted them either as they were within tolerance.
