Time to clean chain
03/21/15 6:31 PM

Going to rain all day, decided to clean and lube chain for first time. I heard it is better to clean with a warm chain, so I put bike on rear stand and ran about 10 min, 2nd gear. Took off left side exhaust, to get access to chain guard so I could give it a good cleaning. It seems the factory used some real thick grease for lube. Was a mess, flung all over guard and evrything else. Took a while to clean everything but I finally got her looking new again. Used the Maxima Wax lube. Goes on clear, looks good. Slack in chain looked good to. Ready to roll, just need some good weather.

My suggestions. Use only kerosene to clean, don't use WD-40. Ride the bike right after the cleaning to fling out the kerosene and get the chain hot. Spray with Maxima and let it sit a few hours until all solvent evaporates from the lube.

I had O rings deteriorate after using WD-40 a few times. It did not destroy them after only a few cleanings but sure seems to have made them swell or break down. I found specks of rubber on my wheel and saw Oring whiskers sticking out of my chain. I inspected after the chain was removed and no o rings were missing.

Plain ol' diesel fuel. #1 or #2.

Trying some Lucas chain lube for now. Have yet to see how much sling, and how hard to clean off.
I used to use the Kawasaki Racing chain lube. It made a mess, but wiped right off.

Let's roll

I'm sure that is fine. it's probably kerosene. I don't know what could be so terrible about WD-40 if kerosene is recommended to clean chains. I tried it and found out why won't use WD-40 ever again.

"I don't know what could be so terrible about WD-40 if kerosene is recommended"...WD="Water displacer"=dry o-rings.

Kerosine=lightly lubed o-rings plus excellent grunge break-up.

WD MIGHT be fine(for cleaning) IF you could get it all evaporated before relubing the chain. But probably most don't want to spend the extra time needed to do this completely. Then it mixes with the new lube...and starts drying that out.

Kerosine is petroleum based..any mixing with a new lube won't harm anything.Maybe make a mess if it isn't dried enough.

I wouldn't listen to Grn. Pretty much his brain consist of green slimy baby shit. Just look at how he post. Hub, you need to get this boy of yours whipped back into shape. You remember how you used to have to talk this dummy and try to explain shit to him over 4 pages in a thread? (although it wasn't you, it was him).

He's doing it again. He's gone full retard. He needs taught everything. He needs taught how to pee.

"I wouldn't listen to Grn."...good.Find out for yerself then.I've had the same experience with WD 40 that Rookmeister has had.Cracked and fraying o-rings.I don't need someone like you to tell me where the bear shit in the buckwheat;)

And just WHY did these o-rings crack and fray?Cause the were DRY...from spraying with WD40.Covering up the initial damage(from the WD sitting on there) with a chain lube won't correct it.

Use WD40 as a chain cleaner consistently...see what happens.

If ya don't think I know anything about this...fine...refer to the ServiceManual then..PG 2-30.Maybe THEY'RE full o'shit,eh?

Paraffin (not sure if that's the equivalent to kerosene) works well because it cleans but still leaves a film of oil behind so it doesn't dry out the rubber rings. Obviously then chain lube. They all seem to fling to some extent.

OIC. Yeah, I get it now. Disregard Hub, I see now. I would've given up too. Trying to teach this retard not to put gerbals up his asshole is like trying to teach a dog calculus. And I'm much rather work with the dog. At least it can get me a beer that won't be covered in shit by time he brings it to me.

EAT A GRN DICK.

Vic, Grn is doing fine. Remember, this is the net, same as me trying to convince a friend to approach the restoring of said bike this way. And you know what, I think mine was missing parts but to restore it to some race replica here is one for 1,700 needs work. He does not listen, spends well over 3k and it's all there running and now he's changing his mind about cutting the seat down first thing. I gave up. I said, don't let anyone tell you what you want to do to your bike, just do it. It's his bike, his problems tearing down a perfect looking Z1 classic, it's not bad looking picture wise, but...

Let it go Vic. Think, 'ain't my bike' so let them spray, soak, clean, this that. And that's the beauty of the net. There is so much you can do or tear your hair because of their applications? Not! Just run your posts and say things your way. That gives someone looking around for a choice to make. They choose double you did or don't care spray, so be it.

I use Liquid Wrench o-ring safe chain lube for cleaner. Spray it on, grunge brush, wipe with a paper towel. A spritz of BelRay Superclean every day on the road or every 300 miles keeps things lubed and clean. Have to clean off the accumulation every oil change.
