OEM tires going off already?
03/31/15 5:22 PM

I'm amazed to see my front OEM Metzler is no longer round after less than 1000 miles. Very few of that was in the canyons because of winter. Is it because it's a rather soft compared to the full-on ST tires I'm used to?

Please tell me I can expect better from a Pilot road!

Are you running factory tire pressures? or lower. This is a heavy bike. Tire wear is greatly effected by tire pressures.

My Metzler started cupping with not too many miles on it, I ditched the shitzlers and
got PR4's best decision I made ...

After talking to a local suspension shop and having ny bike correctly set up for fast 2-up riding, the tech told me that if your tires are cupping your suspension is set up incorrectly. Maybe having a good suspension set up shop make some adjustments will give you better tire life.

some adjustments will give you better tire life.

As stated, must stay on top of the tire pressure for the least amount of cupping phenom. Note how the cupping is a perfectly spaced cup after cup.

We could not adjust front forks way back when and the tires cupped as per phenom of DDDDDDD = Cupped Circumference. A scooping effect. Take a paper cup and mark where the folds meet. The circle never makes what you think is a circle so this sort of makes this D and never really forms an 0 or the fold over mark keeps making a D da D da D Da UPSELL? Did they charge you for a shocking bit of wallet wrinkle that was in the owner's manual and for free is the read and set? Like 2 up and up the shock spring? so the bike is not at a florida rake, but more out of the crate all straight and 2-UP?

Upsell my ass, or someone is not reading the tire phenom!

I just replaced the stock Metzler M5's on my 2012 with new Michelin PR4's. I chose to go with the GT version PR4 rear since I will have hard luggage and/or passengers a fair amount while touring, and the GT is made for the extra heft. Went with the standard version PR4 front.

I managed to squeeze 5,700 miles out of the OEM skins, but I wasn't a big fan of them really... the front tire was cupped to the extreme. And the rear was damn near to the cords. Good riddance.

Now these new PR4's!!! SWEET!!

The Metzlers seem to have a lot of cupping problems, I checked my pressure quite often,
and it still did it, I looked on the web, and it had an unusual amount of complaints about
them cupping ...

Glad mine came stock with Bridgestone s20's. Noticed though tire pressure is the key to tire life.

OEMS definately wear quickly, try Michlen p4s. I got 15500km out of Michelin Pilot 3 and the pilot 4's are looking good with 10,000km on them. Have no problems keeping up with getting infront of people on supposedly soft sticky tires so cant recommend them highly enough

mine came with the battleax tires, i got 10k(miles) out of them. some of it is how you ride, some is tire pressure, some is load, some is road/temp/conditions. I'm in western wa and ride year round, i have pilot road 3s now cause the 4s weren't out yet. Have 6k into these, deep tread and even tire wear. im a fan of the pilots. just my 2

Well, Mr Hub , sir, after a pretty extensive adjustment of the suspension settings, riding the same style, with the same passenger....viola, no more cupping. If it was a upsell, it was worth it.

I have 3500mi on my stock tires they are done. The back starting to flake in the center and the front cup badly. Will be trying PR4's when I get back from vacation in two weeks. Hopefully I like the PR4's I'm putting them on just from reviews here.

My stock Bridgestones weren't bad at all. I ran Dunlop Q3's after that. I liked those more than the Bridgestones. I don't think I got more than 5k miles out of either set. I now have a set of Avon Storm 3D XM's. I love these tires!!! Rode 300 miles all highway and no flat spot on the rear! These tires are by far the slowest wearing tire I have ever seen!!! They ride nice and they heat up quick and feel sticky enough in turns. I absolutey love em! So far they are the best tire I've ever used. I highly recommend these tires for a 14. Tire pressure does matter. I've had good luck running around 39 or 40 pounds in mine. I'm hardly ever two-up and I weigh around 235 pounds.

I just used Pirelli angel GT with an A spec rear on my trip to California. Can't imagine a better tire, the rear looks like I could do the trip over again but the front is understeering enough to justify a new one. Awesome tires.
