Crash Knobs
02/17/14 1:27 AM

Hi everyone!
I need a bit of advice? I want to know what people think of crash knobs on a ZX14R. I have noticed a few people putting down bike lately and seeing I have never had a bike with crash knobs I want peoples opinion of them?

Thanks, Dutchy.

I think they're most likely a waste of money. I have good insurance, if I tip over the bike I'll try it out. I think even with the sliders you'll still be calling your insurance company.

They will save the bodywork in the event of a tipover, but a crash and slide scenario will negate any benefits. Dropped mine at the edge of the road when I hit a rut in the grass turning around, and although there was a wad of mud and grass on the crash bobbin, nothing else was touched.

The most likely thing to happen is that the bike gets dumped over in the driveway. Crash sliders should help avoid much damage in that situation. If you crash for real, you run a big risk of causing the frame cracks or bends because that is where the sliders mount. The bike is a lot heavier than the typical 600 cc track bike.

I have LSL sliders. They mount in two places on the frame which is supposed to make them less of a frame damage risk. However, looking at the bike from the front, looks t me like they would still let the lowers touch in a tipover. The bar end and lever is usually going to hit no matter what you do. The axles will drag in a crash unless you have axle sliders. Those might be worthwhile. I have some Chinese axle sliders off of Ebay that look great and are very nice quality and fit.

Normally they're mandatory equipment for me. But, for the 14, I don't like the way they mount. To me, they pose a real threat to some serious frame damage upon impact.

I have gap insurance and a $250 deductible. I don't think I need sliders.

I had a low speed (30ish mph) slide across two lanes of highway and mine turned out ok without sliders. Fresh tires and sand on the road don't mix well.

The lower cowling and a scuffed up bar end was the the extent of the damage. I'm still riding it with her scars.

Same as mentioned doubt they will do much in a crash but a tip over will save your plastic..

Thank you everyone for your advice and thoughts. I have decided to go with R&G frame sliders and although they are expensive they seem to be the best.

Thanks again, Dutchy

that's about the same price as LSL. I felt the same as you. I felt more secure buying something that had a lot of R&D put into it just incase the bike ever does crash at speed.

'Real' crash knobs/bobbins/bungs, whatever you want to call them are designed to save the frame and engine cases, NOT the bodywork in the event of a an accident. Bodywork is easy and comparatively cheap to replace or repair so is of small importance relative to frame or engine damage. I use the R&G items which are braced across the frame for added strength.
