How loud is loud?
09/03/09 8:10 AM

Ok, so I've been casually thinking about, reading about and pricing up a full 4-2-1 exhaust system for my '09 14.

I find the stock system too quiet, especially as I always wear ear plugs. I like to feel that connection to the engine and to be stirred up by a roaring sound when I'm on the throttle hard.

From what I've read, the Akrapovic, Brock's Performance Alien Head, Tsukigi Cannon and M4 are on my list of possible choices.

What I'm interested in hearing about from owners of these exhaust systems is...are they ok for touring? For example, if I was to do a 400-mile day on the bike with an Alien Head or Cannon installed (whilst wearing ear plugs) would I be hating the excessive noise at the end of the day and wishing I had a Yoshi pipe?

Thanks in advance for any helpful responses!

Still on stockers here, but I've paid attention to this topic for over a year now. I never hear anyone say they love their loud pipes droning on long trip. IMO, I'd live with it during the practical touring situations. It's the excitement that counts for me. (Incidentally, I'm thinking of going with a quieter system but for performance reasons - I really like loud!).

I got Akra 4 into 1 w/carbon fiber cans.
I run with the DB killer OUT and it sounds really nice but a bit loud in close neighborhood areas.
For long distance touring I can put the DB killer in(although I have NOT). It takes all of 5 minutes to install the single screw and I swear it sounds like a stock 14 right out of the showroom. It's that quiet with it in.
So you can have your cake and eat it too.
(I have pics elsewhere in this forum of my DB killer in and out)

I have a yoshi full system with the quiet insert in on my busa, it gave a big boost in power and a huge weight loss, while still being close to stock soundwise at cruising speeds. Its the perfect compromise between performance and sound imo I had scorpion race slip-ons on my 14...honestly they were a little too loud for my tastes at cruising speeds....that drone will wear you out over a long ride. I almost never run with earplugs tho either...the earplugs might make even a loud system do-able on long rides.

I have a Yoshi R77 4-2-1 SS pipes, TI can, with the carbon tip.

I was SHOCKED how quiet it was with the insert in. It is louder than stock, more like throatier, and the popping is much more noticeable, but again not bad. All of this is at highway speeds. I commute 50 miles each way to work on the bike, and it is comfortable with the pipe and insert.

I was specifically looking for a quiet system because of the commute. The Yoshi fit the bill.

I do not wear earplugs, so I know how the system sounds. If you wind it up, it is more noticeable, especially north of 6k rpm.

BTW, I lost 35 pounds to the stock exhaust (according to Yoshi) I did not weigh the system prior to installation.

Hope that this helps...

The Alien head is the loudest in your list and makes
the most power up top.

I would strongly consider Ti-Force if I were you.
Great quality fit and finish and really close to Brock's
as far as power. They look great too.

You could buy a used Brock's for around $600-700 on the zx14 forums.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'll look at the Tiforce..how loud is it?

I like Akra gear, so their full racing system is still up the top of my list.

I do like the Alien Head as far as performance and also just tidying up the bike a bit...it would appear to give great access to the rear wheel for maint & cleaning etc. Just worried it would piss me off after a long day of riding.

Not interested in the Yoshi, because if it's even close to the stock as far as noise levels, then it's too quiet for me. With plugs in I can barely hear the stock note, esp. around town when commuting.

I took a spin the other night with earplugs in...and I could still hear my yoshi well enough to enjoy the sound and not affect my shifting or riding abit. Its louder than stock.....just not wayy louder....although it barks pretty good when you wind it up But if you want an exhaust that gives you chills soundwise when you get on it, the yosh prolly isn't the one lol. Although I've heard with the quiet insert out its quite abit louder.

Got to youtube and listen to all the pipes. I threw on the Tsukigi Cannon and I am totally impressed. It looks good and sounds awesome. My buddies with Brocks are even impressed.

i just got the full sys yoshi r-77 also, and its a nice sound, and it's def louder and you can hear that engine scream at the higher rpm's, but with the silencer it comes with that you can slip in, it purrs, great for those longer trips that you don't really wanna listen to the noise too much...for some reason i kinda like the increased after firing the engine does, especially with the r-77, leaves a nice long afterburner flame coming out the back, looks pretty cool at night when it lights up ur mirror lol

I've been doing some reading on the 'Busa forums and I'm thinking maybe the Tsukigi Oval is the go. I think it looks a lot better on the '14...I'm not convinced the Cannon looks "right"...a bit small and out of proportion maybe? If I got the Cannon, I'd be getting the quiet baffle, but with the Oval I can probably do without the baffle and spend that $ on ceramic coating.

Apparently (according to Greg from HPC) the Oval note is just like the Cannon (same deep growl) but just quieter, and Greg reckons that the Oval actually gives slightly more power than the Cannon too!?!

I looked at the Ti-Force full system too - very similar to the Tsukigi Oval. I think I prefer the Tsukigi's sounds though.

So, I'm thinking Tsukigi Titanium Oval 4-2-1 full system with black ceramic coating from the headers up to the can.

Nice choice. Ask if they will make you a deal on a PC and air filter along with the purchase of the pipe.

Hey Aussie

If your looking for loud then U might want the system roaring toyz 4-2-1

I have it on my bike and it is a crowd pleaser...and it has a baffle that U

can take out and make it even more radical sounding....but with the baffle out it will

give U a headache on a long haul.

.

Anything but roaring toyz!

And also Ti-Force over Tsukigi any day!
I'd pick Akra before Tsukigi too, just my $0.02.

I'm not brand loyal- it's all just what I've seen, touched, heart, read...
Akra is a great choice on any bike, Ti-Force is regarded and dynoed to be
a serios power maker on the 14 and gen2 Busa.
I've had Akras on two previous bikes and they are as advertized.

Why do you give a rat's a$$ if they are loud ? Loud ain't bad, horsepower and handling are bad.

Hey aussie maybe worth a look is the guy that did mine and many mates bikes at slacks creek he was very good and well finished work and like 1000 bucks cheaper than buying a full system and got maximum horsepower gain.So I have a loud one with twin outlet 4 into 1 and a quiet carbon slip on i got off a muffler shop at rocklea and use it during the week and slip on the loud one for fast blasts.
