Popping
06/16/14 5:12 PM

I'm sure this has been addressed on here before but.....lots of popping on deceleration....is this a common issue and is their a fix? Only engine mods are yosh slip ons (R77) and PCV.

Thanks,

Troy

I don't think it is a "problem", but more of a nuisance for me anyway.

No, you have to block the line to reduce the popping.

Every time a 14R rider blocks their air line in an effort to reduce popping, a thousand kittens are fed into a wood chipper fueled by baby tears and unicorn blood.

Cat: I have a little pee nice and not so nice to go out in public naked wit mr bricks hanging out.
Unicant: You can't come out and play withe rest of us you do not strip it down to the cat, Cat.

Cat: Me wow, I scream like a poo sea in heat, all popping and queefing like a well, a poo see?
Unicant: No I can't see. All I sea is an ocean of popping fresh dough out the wallet you jump in the kitty litter with the rest of them.

Cat: Them there how they bark in the night about the sea bass fast and the brick pipe withe pee see what I mean?
Unicant: You can't have a pop without it running tits. It's the cleavage in the middle are the pop-pops. Your chow-chow and vittles, like the cat in the middle you removed. Now squat in the dry box like a good kitty and soak up the tears, we stop digging for that wink of a spray out the rear end.

Cat: You can't talk to me like that.
Unicant: Oh can't I?

Cat: Eye, eye, eye need a kleenex, I'm starting to think about it again. I so wanna jump in the ocean withe rest of my peer. Fishing off the pier looking for HPoosea.
Unicant: You can't have your cupcakes and pee on it too. Someone is knocking down some numbers on a stock bike and you go detuning the bike, plus adding pop on top of it.

Cat: [rubs up against my leg and me wows] WOT's for dinner?
Unicant: Stew Pit

The code of science, not silence.

Pops: I let the cat out of the bag.
Pen: Ultimately I think you did.

Pops: I let nature take its course?
Pen: In an ultimate way, yes.

Pops: I let back in, you?
Pen: Yes, I am the Penultimate number.

Pops: I let lose a formula called, back pressure?
Pen: We live in a vacuum you go blowing shit out the back.

Pops: I let you back in, in other words.
Pen: Words can't describe the shit in the hubbishit.

Pops: No shit, are we back again with the bloodrive?
Pen: Chew know it, biting, kicking, pushing that ass apart, look out, here comes a fart.

Pops: You mean that for every action, my pre-fart had volume, and for every action, the same volume equally went back up?
Pen: So says the theory 'for every action.'

Pops: No shit, I have to live with a popiss-fartsteer, because I let the penultimate back in sooner?
Pen: That, and cold vs. warm air like thunder clap newman, you are a new man now. No more tissues.

Pops: I need to disgust wit nature the shit that goes on around here is one stink hole after another.
Pen: Lucky we live in a vacuum or you'd have one slow ass bike we line the same bikes up and down the line.

Pops: I have webbed feet jumping in the lake withe rest of the Yo shoe mirrors and Stew Pit Fasthell is wit my pop?
Pen: Didn't we just go thru the 14.7 vac you us?

Pops: Yes, but...
Pen: ... Yes but nothing, hand me a tissue.

Pops: For whom?
Pen: I'm having a farkle right now... Talk amongst yourselves.

You guys need to 'think outside' the Hub box. He's telling you the answer. He has a gift of relaying the facts in Hubster speak.Read his post(s) a few more times....it's totally spot on.NO ONE explains this stuff like Hub...he's a genius for sure;)(since ya'll won't read the shop manual..... ....Just kidding;)

Perhaps the trick is...to never chop the throttle all the way when slowingLOL!!!!Feed it down gently?

You can block the tube going from airbox to pair system....easy job...on the 14R...if that's what you have...you need only block the left side tube....left side as when sitting on the bike.It will help some.Plug the hole on the airbox with something that'll fit snugly....then block the tube with a marble or something...this works...usually.Mine isn't blocked...and I get some burbling/popping if I use fast throttle chops to slow while gearing down.Other times...I can minimize the popping by gently slowing and maintaining a mild throttle closing.Truth is...this bike pops and burbles with the stock can on there...you just don't hear it because of the muffler design...it's VERY good for muting those kinds of things.Point is...it's ALWAYS there.

RE: Popping

Basic physics:

14.7 atmospheric pressure:
When the key is turned off, when the bike sits in the garage, what is the pressure in the garage, the room, inside the exhaust pipe? 14.7 psi.

When you start the bike, a different pressure than atmospheric is about to make war with that hole diameter. So when you lift, that back pressure is what? 14.7 back in, pushing the other bubble out of the way.

When we remove any kind of gasoline, an engine, just think of a pipe and 2 pressures, one being the penultimate pressure you continually fight against is that 1 atmosphere.

When you make theory so whack, the loop sends you right back to the same theory. What weighs more, 14 pounds or 8 pounds? So, now I can say, watch the 14 pounds pop the 8 pound bubble right out of the pipe and fill that void of roughly, what, half an ATMO say give or take?

When I say half, I'm saying 14.7 is almost 15. Whereas, 8+8=16. So the whack is half of the 1 atmosphere returns to equal pressure. The low was the pressure being pushed out as a pop. As soon as you WOT the throttle, you more or less have pushed the 14 back out trying to get back in.

When Grn says to sustain throttle on lift, it says not the gas. It says, look how I regulate how fast the pop is still in there under sustain, but not at full chop. Full chop is 14 blew out that one negative pulse, and call 14 the positively squashed that bubble out of there [for argument sake] so you hear it once.

When we add more pipes heading into the one pipe, are we now seeing an instant where there is no fire at the other 3 cylinder's strokes, correct? So, don't we now hear a garble of pops we add more cylinders? Forget the gas, think air pressures and balances.

When we move in elevation, this is one more tune that can make or break the seat of the pants. You have to settle into this popping business, the preset tune you are elevated at or install the stock pipes back on so there is still the pop: but it is deadened.

When all the mods are made, and a suggestion is to ease out of the throttle, don't we see mother nature winning the popping wars no matter the mod? Fall in Love with it. Live with it forever. Enjoy your webbed feet. Why mod a pop any further.

When it's all about the tune, where is the tune? I tune for decel or I tune for accel and whatever decel sounds like... Oh well. So, are we in camp accel or camp decel? I tune the bike for power. No, I tune the bike for pop. No wait, webbed feet are a HP treat. Yeah but my ball sack hangs so low webbed feet wide, I can stick my feet under them and sheboom, Tuned Toes!

NOL to Toe Tunes

Hub, being that atmospheric pressure drops with elevation, would that decel pop be less noticeable the higher above sea level you go, or is there a negligible difference?

RE: Popping

I always thought that the pop was from the ECU attempting to flow the fuel in 'just enough' to keep the bike smooth. You cut the throttle hard...the ecu(i think)is trying to hit that fueling spot, but as the r's drop, the fueling switches from very rich(on the throttle)to very small amounts....to keep the smoothness. It's passing through so many fuel cells in the map...it is trying to deliver a smooth correct fuel flow....you add aftermarket piping and such...freer flowing headers...that same fueling ecu program is gonna have to deal with the now greater airflow(exhaust) and fuel burn. Not to mention the airbox temps and all that.So I don't think you can get a really nice performing engine without allowing for some backfiring. It COULD be tuned out... almost...but the fuel cells may end up leaned out too much for proper engine performance?Add DA...it's a very sensitive bike....and VERY complicated how things work together on it.It aint your 70's and 80's bikes.

Good question. The only way to find out is to take the same bike, make it pop and read a db meter. I have a buddy that trackdays: tells me one track at sea level runs better than the other track at a higher desert elevation. No change in tune to compensate, just the difference in its running between altitudes. Obviously, the lower elevation track is the better ride.

To me, they pop just as loud at either track, so it's down to the meter to see the change.

Runs better as in makes more power, or just has better characteristics? Air is more dense the closer to sea level you get so power will pick up accordingly. Here in south east Texas air density can as good as -2500ft. People are running insane #'s at the drag strip when that happens.

Say the day is cold or the conditions are right, the bike runs a touch better than the last time you rode it. Same kind of difference I would assume. No cells have changed, just the atmo pressure and that brings on another number for the ECU to communicate with, the air itself which makes it more dense. Nothing drastic, just a nice bump.

I have a non abs 2013 14R with the only modifications being a factory center stand and a set of Ti Leo Vince EVO II slip ons. I ride with the standard Leo baffles installed in the exhausts but I do not use the little stainless steel four hole Leo "db killer" plates that shipped with them. I live in northern Colorado, so I am at a bit of altitude (5000 feet). On my machine, I experience no over run pops at all. And I have tried to force them. They just aren't there. About all I can hear on over run is what folks are calling a mild "burble". And I can barely hear that.

I would think that the Leo's and Yosh R77's (I considered R77's but they weren't center stand compatible) are fairly similar in flow characteristics. One can look right through the Leo's end to end even with the baffle in place. There's really not much in the way of restriction.

So, given the general similarity between the machines with the exception of the OP's PCV and his location, one would perhaps conclude that the old 3% per thousand feet loss of air density is working in my favor. Significant power loss due to altitude, but no "pops". :-)
