I usually get Pilot Road 3 tires on my bikes, but my stock rear Metzler's steel belts were showing and I made an impulse buy of the Shinko 009 ($112). My dealer is skeptical about the tire, but I've put 100 miles on it and I like it so far.

So, I just did some reading here on the forum about tire's 'speed rating'. Since my tire size is 190/50ZR17, I assumed that it was 'Z' rated. I thought that was the 'best' rating and that it was good for the 186 MPH top speed of the ZX14r. Actually, Z isn't the best, it's only for 149. The tire I got is W rated, good for 168.

So would you trust a Shinko at 168? How about a burst up to 186?

To me honest with you alot of people buy W rated tires and don't realize it. You should be fine, I mean how often do you really go 180+ and for how long? And to make you feel better pro rickey gadsen uses those tires on his turbo bike and goes 170+ in the quarter mile with alot more power and abuse than on the street. A lot of racers use and abuse those tires and they last pretty good. Granted there are a shit ton better tires out there for the street, you should be fine. Yeah I bought power3's still waiting to burn out my stockers to put them on.

Just went onto Michelin tires website and the power 3's that everyone here talks about and I just ordered, they are all W rated tires also. Check it out for yourself. Your good ranger. Hey ranger how long did your stockers last anyway??

Technically speaking, there is a "Y" rating for tires--186mph--but I don't think you will find any motorcycle tire w/this rating....just sayin'
