Where Do You Go Fast?
05/28/09 12:35 PM

Let's face it, none of us bought these bikes to go 65 mph as the recent poll shows. Where do you guys go fast? I mean apparently, all of us have done anywhere from twice to three times the legal speed limit on our 14s and those are go directly to jail speeds unless you get lucky and get pulled over by a sympathetic sport bike riding cop (there are a few out there). I hear a lot of guys talking about running, to me that's just plain foolish. Yea, you might get away but if something goes wrong the consequences are dire. Just food for thought.

My neighborhood. I expect a letter about someone with a quiet engine moving 60 in a 25 residential [6th gear and keep speeding up, leaving the hood]. OK, I back off before the houses show up on the way in. It's the entry point left, right, right left hander is quick turning before someone comes the other way is more a fast blind turn and dangerous is someone can come down that hill as you come out wide left and hit a front grill of some vehicle. I love that spot on the last section heading home.

I just sit on it and it acts the same way as, paints bike.

Highway, Western burbs of Milwaukee. I know the speed trap locations and tactics pretty well. Morning, weekend, light traffic, I'll find a 3/4 mile gap between cages and hit it. It takes no time to get from 60 to 150mph. You have plenty of space to enjoy a short high speed zip. Only thing is coming up behind those cars is just like riding 70 mph at the back of a parked vehicle. I have been amazed the bike doesn't slow down from those speeds all THAT fast even at 0 throttle. You coast right up behind them and have to brake a little. i haven't dared pass anyone going that fast because I know it's gotta be like you just appeared out of nowhere. People's heads are spinning around in the cages wondering where you are.

Kind of strange world we ride in, where we have to slow down enough to pass!

One more-
The parkway by my house. Beautiful curves I have taken so many times i feel like i can ride them like a pro. Funy thing is the cop always waits in the grass middle of the staightaway below the hill. He hears me coming but he can't get me because I already had my fun on the curves and have slowed down for the straightaway. If he's not there, I'll open it up. A couple weeks ago, they had one of those digital signs up that radar you and show your speed to you and everyone behind you. I got a BIG flashing 93 out of the display as i aproached. Not bad.

We have millions of great places in South Africa to speed. We must be the luckiest guys alive. Also to jail if over 200 km/h and the cop is having a bad day, but you can see for miles ahead in some places.

Man you guys are lucky, I used to have it like that down in San Antone but those days are long gone. I'm gridlocked now with 40 miles of freeway in any direction loaded with traffic and popo. If I can't get the old girl up to at least a buck twenty I feel like it's a wasted ride. Best thing I've found around here is to use speed in very short bursts, never in a straight line, always taking a high speed curve (freeway cloverleaf works well here) and use traffic for cover. I like to creep through traffic about 10 mph faster to check out what's ahead and clear my six o'clock then let er rip but not too long ...quick burst to 130 hit the overpass turn (this really burns the chicken strips off your tires with the high G load) then back out of it. It's a quick shot of adrenaline that gets your pulse pounding and clears the cobwebs, kinda like a double shot of Espresso from the local Starbucks in the morning.

I live in Utah, everything west of the Salt Lake valley is pretty much desert. Easy to either go out to the desert and ride fast, or head up the Wasatch Mountain canyons for twisteies :)

I can pick my spots almost anywhere but it can only be short bursts. There is no where around here to cruise at 100 + with out going to jail.

Lotsa wide open roads out here in the sticks to open the big girl up. There's a stretch between Westport and Tokeland that takes the cake, however. It's straight, flat, and the pavement is flawless. One side of the road is a hillside, and the other is the ocean. There's no cross streets or driveways, and the shoulder is as wide as a third lane. It's one of those spots where you can maintain high speeds, not just crack the throttle open and back off.

LOVE THAT SPOT!

All over Montana!-Just for the record-I got me ANOTHER speeding ticket yesterday-$40.00 to send to the court-God,will I ever learn?(90 in a 70).Crested a hill, was opening er up to catch and pass a travel trailer ahead, yep, there he came, crested the hill coming my way-oooppps-Looked in the mirror-Ya-brake lights on,and makin a quick u-turn.I just pulled over and waited.God-what a drag.At least my bud on his Busa(who was riding behind me)didn't get tagged.Spoiled an otherwise AWESOME ridin day.Well,I can say I've been "lucky" when it comes to "getting caught".Had plenty of "close calls"-Usually when I'm by myself.Well-have fun and BE CAREFUL.We don't want anyone gettin maimed or worse here(speak for yourself?)LOL.BTW-I wouldn't use the "excuse"...."well sir, these bikes are so smooth that you don't realize yer goin that fast"-sounded good to me(which is partially true) .Ya-he wasn't buyin it either.I gotta be honest here-90 in a 70 is fortunate-If they knew how many times they"just missed me" as I was sailin along WAY north of a buck-they'd probably lock me up pronto!!Like someone said here-you play you pay.Hmm-90 in a 70-almost insulting, isn't it? Props to the Speedohealer guys-they're product definitely worksLOL....Dogo-5 OVER?-WTF is right!!Sorry man-hope ya get out of that one somehow!!!Geez.(they CAN'T be SERIOUS,can they?)Maybe they should change the name from Freeway to Toll road!!!

^^^^^
$40 for 20 over?!?!?!?

That's a $200 ticket here with the cop having an option to also charge a reckless.

Swear though it used to be that the cops wouldn't even look twice at a bike doin' 20 over.... now I have a court date, next month, for doin' 5 over on my zx10!!!
The kid that wrote it had to have been straight (I say that with a smirk) outta the academy and proceeded to lecture me about the dangers of speedin on motorcycles.... WTF.... 5 OVER!!!... on the freeway even!!!

If the popo can prove your racing here it's mandatory forefeiture of your bike (as in you don't ever get it back), massive fine, jail time. Anything above 25 mph over the posted limit can get you a wreckless driving citaion which is a big hit too...depends on the mood the cop is in at the time. There's really not too many places around here you can get up to a good cruising speed of.. oh ....let's say 130 mph and just stay there. Your luck is going to run out sooner or later. Pity too cause the "sweet spot" on a 14 seems to be betwen 120 and 130.

Deals Gap NC the Dragon and Rt 28.

The way that is policed, I don't see how anyone could. I at least have the patch.

Best place for going fast, I won't probably see again. When I was riding my ZX11 in western Europe. Haven't seen anyplace remotely as fun to go fast, and as safe, and free of police interference, since or before.

I did 1,000 miles one day heading for the South Coast (Antibe, Nice) on strictly rural roads. Perfectly asphalted, smooth, no traffic, no cross traffic, no farmers with tractors, no cops. Hell, the French even camber their curves properly, banking the sweepers and all. My trip through the southern Alps and into the great canyon just before you get to the coast was as fast as I was capable of going, and nothing to slow me down.

There I could ride for 6, 8 hours and never have to slow down except to take breaks and get petrol.

I even got to take her to 190ish on Route 10 in Belgium, and the orange Porsches of the Federal Police sitting along the autoroute ignored me.

Here on the East Coast of the USA, we've got nothing close. When I lived in California for 20 years, we had little pieces of what I found in Europe, but thats all. Little pieces of it.

When I crossed the USA coast to coast, once the north route, once the south (had to see original Route 66 at least once, from Winslow AZ going east) route, and all I ever found was little pieces of it.
