Security ideas for the ZX-14?
03/06/11 1:11 AM

What is the best way to protect a bike like ours besides being locked in the garage? I live in a secured condo but I travel often... Does anyone have the GPS tracking alarm system installed? Do you like it?

Lojack is the best, if they have coverage in your area. Any authorized Lojack installer can hide one so deep on your bike nobody will ever be able to tell it is there.

The cops find Lojack vehicles within a very short time.

I think there are also the type of alarms that notify you when tripped. That along with lojack would put me at ease to leave my bike in an open parking lot. Lojack is only good once you know the bike is missing.....

I plan on weather proofing a 2 Way Viper alarm, and adding a digital tilt sensor. I do mobile install for a living, so I know I can do this pretty easily. The digital tilt sensor can be set up for 1 degree, or 3 degree. So basically if you arm the alarm, it considers it current position 0, and if somebody were to even try and get it off the kickstand, no matter how gently, the tilt sensor would go off. Id also have the standard shock sensor on there as well, but a bike could easily be gently rolled away without that going off, if they were careful enough.

Well, for the alarm part the Gorilla has a 1/2 mile range pager option, and I have used one for several years.

The Scorpio systems are better but very much more expensive. And do the same thing.

Lojack is for when your pager goes off but by the time you get there they've tossed it in the back of a truck and are gone. You call 911, and have them activate your Lojack, and get your bike back.

Insurance is a good idea, wow.... Why didn't I think of that? Lol. The reason I posted this was to get some ideas, so far this is what I discovered. Their is a alarm called Phantom from California. You install their gps system and then it is the usual paging alarm but they use a calling center. If your bike moves after you park it and arm it, they call your cell and text you. The police can track your bike like lojack.
It's $500 plus $15 monthly. Of course they could go out of business and then your finished.
Then Scorpio rLink. Does the same thing but has an iPhone or smart phone web application. Your bike contacts you for help. It is $535 plus $65 activation fee and after a year, $15 a month monitoring. It will work like lojack and show you on your phone using the phones map where your bike is heading. The police can go retrieve it then unless you have a gun and lots of friends.

The basic alarms just let you know your bike is gone so you can wave goodbye. I'm still reaserching the smartest device besides a bike cover to hide it.

GPS is easily jammed, and doesn't work well in the back of a cargo van, metal sides and roof.. Lojack can't be jammed, as it is only a beacon, you jam it, you basicly make the signal louder, and easier to track.

i read somewhere that the easiest and cheapest tracking device is taking an old cell phone and activating it (or one of the cell phones made for kids) get the car charger and hard wiring that to the battery and hiding it under your seat... making sure you write all the MEID numbers from the box, and setting the phone to auto answer...

then what happens when or if the bike is stolen or "misplaced" you call the police and cell phone company give them the MEID numbers and presto change-o you have a tracking device......

i haven't tried it yet, but i read it works... and if you have a family cell phone plan you can just add this phone to the family plan and you wouldn't necessarily be paying anything bc the phone would never be used... theoretically it makes sense!

Theoretically. But LoJack is practical, proven, and used every day to recover very expensive motorcycles and cars. Not to mention tractors (as in tractor-trailer).

I always wanted to get one of those shackle anchors that mount in the cement. Mainly just because they look cool and I don't have enough to trip over already in my garage!

On the anchor idea, I have a rubber insulated 1 inch thick braided steel cable thats going through the frame of my garage, then through the wheel and then locked back into itself.

If you live in a city I would say anything can happen. I happen to be out in farm country which is better but you still get the occasional Meth Head looking for something he can flip for drug money. My general theory is if they want it bad enough they'll get it, but it doesn't hurt to make em work for it.

At my last house, I could leave the key in the bike and outside for a year, and it would still be there. I didnt even have a key to that house, the back door was always unlocked, but I did have a garage door opener. I currently moved to a larger city to be closer to St Louis. I live in a nice neighborhood, but there is a ghetto area a couple miles from me. I dont think ill ever have anything stolen, but 30 seconds, and $50 for the steel cable lock, is just icing on the cake. I guess the same goes for my 40cal pistol I keep loaded with hollow tips in my night stand. Have I ever woke up and thought for a split second "what was that sound? grab the gun" No, but its always sitting there anyway. I know if somebody wanted my bike, there is nothing I could truly do to stop them, Im not always home, and neither is my dog, but most of the time thief's will lean towards easier targets.

I've thought about looking into getting something like lojack for my bike as well. But the only thing is i'm in the military and always moving around so some places are not covered. I have the disc lock and i have a chain that i typically wrap around the rear tire + Frame. Like someone said in a earlier post, if someone wants the bike bad enough they will do what they need to. but thats when you hope to have insurance, luckily i have that too.

Lots of great perspectives; especially in the recovery realm. But, I'm looking for a quality deterrent and I don't want to carry around any bulky pagers or pay a monitoring fee. Suggestions?

Hey Mike
I have this system and I am very happy with it. It sends me a text and somekind of emergency alert to my IPHONE also lets me set alarm from where ever I am. I also lets You track eveywhere you rode for the day with what speed you got up to with an actual map view. I live in NYC motorcycle robery capital of the world so a system like this just seems like the right thing to have. Here is a picture after a ride.

After my ZX10 was stolen, ( lifted up , still locked while on a wheeled carriage) I now have:

1. My ignition lock
2. A large disk lock
3. A huge hardened chain through the front wheel going around a post.
4. A Kryptonite link cable lock through the wheel around said post.
5. A cover

So far, no one seems to want to bother my bikes anymore...

I have the Scoripio Alarm with GPS, but the LOW JACK promises to also be very good...

I am anal, I lock the bike, chain, it, u lock it, disk brake lock it, and alarm it when I go away. Of course it is locked in my house, garage...But that's me. Sure I have theft, but if she is stolen I will be paid a small fraction of her worth.
