Oil Change Fail
09/29/20 10:09 AM

Posting this as i have no fear of ridicule lol and if it helps the next guy thats all that matters..

With that being said, I performed my first oil change on the 14R yesterday and today.. it was a fail to say the least. Background on me, im fairly mechanical and can do basic maintenance on bikes and cars and have changed oil countless times in the past, never paying anyone for that type of work.
So yesterday, I do the oil change with little fanfare, was very simple actually.. I found that its best to be on the brake side of the bike to loosen the drain plug and later on the clutch side to torque it down. I pre-filled the oil filter a bit as well.. no issues. The fail started after I completed the job and then was pouring the old oil from the catch pan to my used oil container and found the drain plug washer starting at me at the bottom of the pan.. ugh!
Being the anal guy I am, I didn't want to leave it as is and risk an oil leak sometime down the line so I decided to drain the new oil back into my catch pan after I cleaned it as best as I could manage. I then re-torqued the drain plug, this time with the washer, and re-filled the new oil back into the bike. As I only had 1-gallon with another 1-gallon yet to be delivered I knew Id be at least .4-.5 (with spillage) to get it to full. Well later in the day the second gallon of oil was delivered and I marked 1/2 quart and poured in to the bike and the level was at full.
I then slept on it and that's when things went awry. Fears of contamination led me to start again today and attempt a re-fill, this time with pristine new oil from the 2nd jug. I repeated the process only on the drain plug and emptied the oil. I then re-filled with 3.5 quarts (4.0 quarts came out) so I knew Id be 1/2 quart low. I dumped the newish oil from the pan into the 1st empty gallon jug and then tried to filter it into the empty 2nd jug using a funnel and coffee filter.. if anyone has ever tried this it is like watching a snail move and is extremely slow, I wound up spilling more than I filtered.. in the end I filtered 1/2 quart which was all I needed and added that to the bike.. to add insult to injury I almost, almost dropped the bike on me while holding it straight up (off the 2x4 that was under the kickstand) and had a shitting bricks moment, luckily I righted that with no issues..
So long story short, make sure you have the oil washer on before re-torqueing :)

Yeah I am pretty sure I would have pulled the plug and put my finger over the drain hole, put washer on plug then screw back in pan. I have a lift and it is easier than laying on the floor trying it. I put ZX11 valve springs on my ZRX and had just set the head back on the cylinder when I noticed that the valve spring shims were still on the work bench. I think I just closed up the gayrage and decided to make it a tomorrow job. We all have done stupid stuff that we end up laffing at and it makes for good stories,

Thanks for sharing yours with us.............

Why did you change the oil the second time? Was your drain pan extremely contaminated and impossible to properly clean before you drained the oil from the initial change?

We've all had brain farts like that in the garage. Good for learning a thing or two and getting a laugh.

We all do stupid things. If I had a penny for every stupid thing I've done, I would not be doing my own oil changes...

those gaskets do have a tendency to stick to the oil pan.

It seems like a little sand or gravel usually drops off the bike and into the drain pan when I drain oil. I wouldn't want to pour even fresh oil back in after draining it. If there was any sand that fell in the pan, you would have seen it in the bottom after you poured it back in the motor. Even if some got poured in, that would get trapped by your pickup screen or at least the oil filter or it would just stay in the bottom of the oil pan.

I'm curious what I will find in my oil pan when I drop it someday.

I also keep a couple rubber expandable drain plugs on hand for when them 3 threads in the oil pan quit working.

almost dropped the bike on me while holding it straight up (off the 2x4 that was under the kickstand) and had a shitting bricks moment, luckily I righted that with no issues..

did not have that luck... was washing my bike, and thought it would be good to have a flat piece of wood under the kickstand, because the soil underneath seemed to be soft, and would get even softer with the water

the bike was still slightly tilted to the left, but not enough, as i would soon find out... while washing the left side fairing, pushed the bike just slightly, and down she went... was not in a position to stop the fall

Stupid ? Try starting a Ducati with a half inch breaker bar and socket still on the crankshaft nut. Oh yeah, and make sure it can hit your shin.....
