What color of locktite for inside engine?
03/19/14 8:10 AM

I generally would stay away from using any locktight inside the motor but I have an Woodcraft cover for my busa that has an exterior skid pad with screws that install from within the cover. Also, there is a sensor that reads the generator rotor in there. The sensor is bolted to the inside of the cover also.

I think I should use locktight because I have noticed anodized screws seem to have a tendency to come loose. These are steal screws but the cover is anodized aluminum. I'd hate to have one of those screws fall out in there. That would be bye-bye busa!

So what kind of locktight? Hightemp?

purple: locks the loosest
This is for phillips/flat blade work. Anything above that may booger the heads. Hex heads would take the stronger grades from here.

blue: lock it loose
This color is for lots of removable work. You want to salvage a screwdriver head. Use less or run the drop at the back of the thread. This way, you have plenty of lock for a few threads, not start at the front and it wipes a lot of threads and now it's tear out the phillips and flat blade heads.

red: lock it tight
This color is more a semi-permanent stick. If nothing is coming off as far as service work, something like rear/front sprocket nuts and the front disc bolts. A semi-permanent down the road drop, these need changing out, but take a lot of abuse and power to it, you rather red up to these items.

green: locks it up
This is Mr. Badass and you want to stay away from this color. This is more the air tool needing to come out and if that didn't do it, hammer and chisel it in half kind of tight. This would be used on a Harley crank that has a nut to hold the flywheel half in place on the crank throw.

Looking at the Tech Data Sheets online, says:

blue 242, service temp range -65 F ~ 300 F. Shear with hand tool and remove with meth chloride.

red 271 high strength, service temp range -65 f ~ 300 F. Heat parts to 482 F and sepparate while hot.

red 272 high strength, high temp is good to 450 F. Apply localized heat to 482 F to remove.

green 290, service temp range -65 F ~ 300 F. Shear and clean with meth chloride or heat parts to 500 F to separate parts while hot.

I'm thinking 271 would be a good one to go with. You think 300 F is high temp enough for a stator cover Hub?

271 is fine. The reds are close enough. Here's the concern: flat and phillips heads are no blue but purple is the apply. Any bolt head or nut, blue and red are fine. Don't even go near green. If the beauty cover or safety cover you are installing has a hex or flat blade, then purple up. If you are going to remove it to sell it, blue it. If it goes with the bike, red it.
