Increasing Comfort
04/23/20 8:53 AM

So my new ZX14R is great but could use some more comfort mods. It already has Heli Risers at 3/4" rise but i decided to buy a set of StreetRays 1.25" riser for $50 new. I've read some have stacked Heli Risers with GenMars for a 1 3/4" rise and others have stacked (2) 1" risers so it seems that with little modification on an ABS bike that 2" rise is possible and appears that only the brake side resevoir bracket may need to be bent or lowered with a fab'd bracket.
I may just replace the Heli Risers and see how the 1.25" risers feel and if it gives much of an improvement alone though before i go the 2" rise route.
In addition i found that my hands were getting a bit tingly sooner than usual so i found this on Amaazon, a foam grip to go over the existing grip and hopefully doesnt look to goofy and works:

I purchased the knight design foot pegs that are 1 3/8" lower than stock. The problem was that they stick out so far that they got in the way when I put my feet down (I have a 30" inseam) so I cut 3/4" off the peg and now it works well.

next I will buy a touring windscreen. Hard to find one that does not look kind of goofy...

Although motorcycles have broken my bones, they have greatly improved my quality of life. A fair trade...

I have 1" risers and am comfortable. I also have the foam sleeve over my grips.
I use the "Grip Puppies" Would never go back.

Yea i was considering the lowering pegs as well but holding off on that for now as its ok comfort-wise plus losing the resting spot for the back on my heel may introduce more discomfort..

With regard to the foam grips, what would you suggest as the best method to maneuver them over the existing grips without ripping them, i read soaking them in soap and water? what worked for you?

Gonna sound dumb maybe, but I bought two of those ice scrapers that have the foam handle grips.Worked great.Have em on both my bikes. They'll conform easily over the stock grips. You can find a color you want online.

Add a little bit of dish washing liquid and enough water to activate it and the grip or grip cover should slide on fairly easily.

No need to SOAK it in soapy water.

Sometimes more isn't necessarily better.

Thanks guys for the suggestions..

As a follow-up: i received the 1.25" risers yesterday and they were a breeze to install and provide a bit more comfort than the Heli's i removed. I placed an order for M8x90mm bolts and am awaiting those and then will lastly try it out in a stacked configuration at 2" and see if i like that any better.

Took a ride today and she feels nicer with the 1.25 risers but im still wanting to do the full 2" to see how much better it may get. In anticipation of doing the stack once I receive the bolts on order, I fabricated a 1" extension bracket for the brake reservoir and its now a full 1" clearance over what it was previously to the windscreen so with the stack i should have a good 1/4" clearance when completed. I may do a write up with pics at that time in case it helps anyone else

Incremental Update:

Received the new M8x90 bolts and stacked the original Heli Risers on top of the Street Ray risers for a total of 2" over stock. Since i performed the brake resevoir lowering via metal bracket already it went together nicely. The only issue im running into if on full left lock where the throttle cables are bumping up into the windscreen on the bottom right corner. I looked into adjusting the throttle housing but it has a notched plastic piece on the inside which goes into a small hole on the bar.. i didnt want to break the tab away and have to deal with the throttle moving in an unintended direction nor did i want to drill a hole at this time so will live with it for the time being.
Curious to hear if anyone got around this in any other way..

Thanks.. attached are a few pics of the completed project. Took a short spin and can feel already that hand pressure is reduced further and looking forward to the grip puppy knock offs to arrive and that should definitely solve the sleepy hand syndrome.

One thing you might want to try in the future is going with aftermarket bars and drilling holes as needed for the MCs, pods and throttle cable housing. You always have your OEM parts to put back on if you want.

I plan to eliminate the pods and squeeze everything in as close as possible to narrow the handlebars someday. That might work for your throttle problem but I doubt it would improve comfort.

I used at one point TWO of the spacers in there. One heliriser, one genmar.Had to buy new bolts of course.Hardware store.AND I had to rotate the throttle cables under the grip. But they worked fine.I didn't care for the way they made the bike look after a while though,so I removed the genmars.

Can i ask how you rotated the throttle cables under the grip?

When i removed the 2 screws to dismantle the throttle cable housing to see if it could be rotated i found the plastic clip part that goes into the hole in the bar. I initially tried rotating the housing and then screwing back together but since the protruding plastic tab was not seated in the bar hole when i tightened slightly snug the screws i found that the throttle was sticking.l. the only way i can figure on rotating is either to grind down that plastic protruding piece or to drill another small hole in the desired orientation so that the cables move further down.

You can't go wrong for 11 bucks. There's others on Ebay. How bad could it be if your going to grind the pin off anyway? Spray paint it black if it's scratched.

So after searching stacked riser threads and reading a few posts where the author described rotating the throttle housing and breaking off the tab, I decided to try this for myself, although i wanted to do it right and not break the tab. I did the following to accomplish the throttle housing rotation to an acceptable angle to allow full left lock turn with the 2" risers:

1. Remove 2 screws securing throttle housing
2. Using a marker, place a mark on one of the throttle cables and a corresponding mark on the throttle hole that the cable sits in.. this will ensure you dont mix the cables up later
3. Remove both throttle cables from the throttle by popping out each of the 2 end pieces
4. Either using my attached pic as a guide or determining the best spot for you, place a mark on the bar where you will drill the retaining hole
5. Using a 5/32" drill bit drill a hole deep enough to accommodate the tab on the throttle housing.
6. Re-route the 2 throttle cables from the underside to the new location and attach to the throttle
7. Attach the throttle housing in the rotated position with the tab seated in the new hole
8. Attach the throttle housing top part and insert the 2 screws by hand. With the throttle in this position there will be very little clearance for the top-most screw and i had to hand tighten both screws. I was able to tighten the bottom screw with a screwdriver but for the top screw i simply used a phillips head bit and a pair of pliers to tighten down until fully seated.
9. Test the throttle and ensure it moves smoothly

*Oh and my new grip covers arrived and they fit and feel great. Im very happy with the results of the 2" risers paired with the grip covers.

Very nice! Safer than grinding off the pin too. I will be mounting gauges on the RH bar someday and this might come in handy for me. Thanks.

LOL I think some of them just want to see you do yo thang. Watch out in the corners, I had a vette ride my butt without a problem. I messed up the corner but I don't think it would have been much different had I entered it perfectly.

If it's a fast car, it might be a test of who's got bigger balls. I lost to a Porche years back because I couldn't beat him quick enough and he was willing to go faster than I was. A 6 point ticket put the fear in me.

I hear you.. i tend to ride this bike more like a slingshot.. cruising alittle over the speed limit and then a quick blast and heavy on the brakes back to normal speed. And i have all of my senses on the prowl for any cops, dont speed over hills, etc.. knocking on wood ofcourse :)

Get a better seat and you will LOVE the bike even more, I also have the double stack and a throttle lock for long stretches where I can give my hand a break for a bit, usually the long straight stretches I eat up VERY quickly though..lol

A well driven and set up sports type car can outcorner a bike. I had one of those new Subaru sports cars try to leave me on Redwood Rd. He was actually pretty good although he didn't take advantage of his superior grip from 4 tires in the corners. So I was able to hang with him pretty easy. I tried to give him a thumbs up at the end of the road, but I guess he was butt hurt for not being "King of the Road". He wouldn't even look at me.

Are we talking about racing cars now?

One of my more memorable car v bike events was the Corvette that followed me into one of my favorite off ramps. It was 270 degrees of a full circle and pretty tight. I had it down but I choked a little knowing a fast car was following me. He was crawling up my butt the whole way. When I took my old Carolla on my favorite corners, I found I could take them at the same speed as my bike without loosing traction. I can imagine a decent sports car would feel a lot more stable. The best might keep up with a car in a corner but you're hard pressed to beat them. You can make for that when the road gets straight.

...but if it's a really fast car, they'll catch you again at top speed.
