Coun ter Shaft cover removal?
04/25/11 2:00 PM

I want to get to my front sprocket to get it all clean.

How does one revove the countershaft cover to get to it?

Also Lubing the chain,, you want to get it on both sides of the rollers correct?

I usually use wd-40 to wipe down the chain really good,, and also do the same to the rear sprocket,, then ride it around to warm up the chain. After that I apply Maxium chain lube.

I just really want to get to the front sprocket,, Im sure its a mess!

Thanks.

SPROCKET COVER

Steps 1, 2 , 3 & 4

Yes. I srpay both sides along the edge. I spray at the back sprocket and aim for the edge of the roller on both sides. I'm sure it gets on the orings too. The spray is not too precise. I hold the can close and I prefer to not use the straw.

Do be careful of chain and sprockets. I'm sure you know but never run the wheel on engine power while cleaning or lubing. Great way to loose fingers.

I think the jury is still out on WD 40 for oring chains. I am pretty suer it breaks down thin rubber. It won't destroy orings on contact butr after repeated use, maybe. I have seen evidence of oring ware after cleaning with WD.

^^
If you wan to see how dirty it will look at 25,500 miles, check out the pics below step 13. Before and after clean. It really was not that bad. Most of the guk will get flung against the inner chan guide and drip down and out of the bottom of the sprocket cover rigth on your side stand hinge..! Kind of a neat little way to self lube the side stand.

I really doubt it is necessary to ever clean the sprocket area but if you get the chance during a sprocket change, might as well. That's what I did. With all the slime on that new chain, I imagine it looks worse than before I cleaned it now that I have put a couple hundred miles on it.

When I think about it, I realize how warped it is but I would actually be entertaining the thought of working on someone else's 14. ....but then I get to ride it once in a while too.
