DON'T FORGET!!!
06/11/14 10:33 PM

Just a friendly reminder. I know lots of people whom neglect their chains!!!! Chain maintenance is just as important as changing your oil on a regular basis and checking tire pressure! Clean that road grime and shit off the chain once in a while, check adjustment, and for fu**sake oil/grease it regularly!!! Dry(or improperly adjusted) chain = broken chain which can leave you high and dry stranded, bust yo gear case, or cause a wreck!!! Maintenance is the first thing I notice when I look at a bike. I clean mine every 1000 miles or so depending on the conditions. I oil every 300-600 miles. So anytime you're sitting around kicking tires wishing you could ride spend a moment with your chain.

All this talk of "lube" and no one mentions "Always wear protection"!

Seriously, I clean the chain religiously. Walmart tech spec lubricant to clean ( very cheap and works great) and chain wax to lube.

This has been my little kick for a couple weeks now...chain maintenance. I think in this case "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" as they say. I've never used kerosene before but I have to say it works pretty well. Grunge brush does all the dirty work and I get to put my mind at ease knowing she's clean and lubed properly. Riding in rain or on gravel/dusty roads can lead to premature wear...so use good judgement. I will be lubing every 500-ish miles and cleaning with kerosene only once it's not up to my standards and has become too dirty. If no rain, could go several thousand between deep cleans with just lube upkeep. Here's the clean-freak side of me using my thought-up-on-the-spot wheel and tire cover to save them from the kerosene. Looks pretty dumb, but it worked like a charm! Not a drop touched my painted black wheels :)

9 and 10 here. back to back. Learning from others experience doesn't always work but learning from your own usually does ...after it happens twice!

OH, we're talking about bikes!

hehe, they DO cost a bit in time and dollars but I still love the lil ankle biters. Might as well, once you got 'em, they're yours for ever...sorta like false teeth.

Grunge brush does all the dirty work

I have that grunge brush and it really makes chain cleaning a lot faster. Ordere a lot of bristle refiils because the bottom one gets bent over after a few cleanings. I press the grunge brush onto the chain from below and hold a denture brush (speaking of false teeth) on the top. Working both together, all 4 sides of the chain get scrubbed at once.
