LED for license plate is flickering.
05/30/09 1:10 PM

I noticed the LED is flickering. This is part of the fender eliminator kit from Ted's.
I thought it was a loose connection but I turned off the motor and it still flickered the same. All 3 lights are doing it.
I've never owned anything with LED lights. Is this how they act when 1 is bad?

Wouldn't you know I don't have my receipt. And I can't locate Ted's website.
Anyone here know? I tried searching Teds fender eliminator kits.

OK. I found his site. It's Moto-Fab.
I'd still like to know if this is what LED's do when they fail. All connections are solid. Anyone here changed just a bulb or does the unit have to be replaced? Thanks for any help.

Hey KAK-I don't know what LED's do when they begin to fail-however-the service manual(and owner's manual)say to "replace unit even if ONE led display is not working"(taillamp unit)"by your Authorized Kawasaki Dealer" .Who knew? That's the stock taillamp.Ride safe there!!BTW-I replaced my taillight unit once after I had my misshap.Wasn't able to get "inside" the lens part(maybe you can?)The license lamp is a standard bulb type however-and that CAN be accessed and replaced.(on the stock fender unit).

Thanks for the reply.
This is the little 3 LED unit that comes with Ted's fender kit. The wiring connections are good so I assume the quick flickering means the unit is failing. I left him a message. I also left a message at Signal Dynamics, the company that makes the unit. They should know if the unit is servicable.
Dang package says 100,000 hour bulb life but I got about 200 hours.

I'm not sure that an LED lamp wouldn't just stop lighting, instead of flickering?Sounds like a connection prob to me?

Had the same problem. Replaced with the part Ted uses as supplied by Signal Dynamics Corporation, signaldynamics.com part #03253. 14.95 each plus shipping. Got a spare too. Didn't bother getting into warrantymor anything; just wanted to get it going again.

Thanks. That's what I'm going to do too. The SignalDynamics package claims 100,000 hour bulb life but I got about 200 hours.
Hope the next unit lasts like it should. Not sure how it flickers like that when failing but I know it's the unit. There's a resistor in there that may fail. I don't know. Cheap to fix though. Just don't like having to do it again.

Yeah I hear you on not wanting to have to do it again. I hope that they aren't problematic in general because it's a nice solution to lighting the plate and I would hate to change to something else. And also Ted and his are products are awesome and I would guess that he made a good choice about sourcing from Signal Dynamics. Time will tell.

I'm hoping too that I just got a bad unit. I'm not sure what other kit I'd go with if I had to, since I've drilled holes in the tail piece now. If there are continued problems I'd guess the cause would be vibration? Signal Dynamics says these units are made specifically for motorcycles. Also supposed to last 100,000 hours.
I e-mailed Ted and he's sending me a new one provided I send back the used one. I didn't actually request a replacement, I just wanted to know if it was as simple as putting in a new bulb and could he supply a bulb(I know nothing about LED's). He said the unit is sealed/non-servicable and said he'd send me another. Good guy. I think I'll buy another one through SD as a spare and hope for the best. Knowing me, I'll have this bike a long time and I don't want to find out SD quit making the unit a year from now.
Thanks for the replies and good luck with yours too.

Maybe with any luck we just got a bad batch of them. LED's themselves are pretty solid and shouldn't be affected too much by vibration, but solder joints are another story. We'll just have to see......

When a LED fails it emits no light (very rare) if it is flickering there is a loose connection somewhere - start wiggling the wires and connectors - if no loose wire or connections are found it must be a cold solder joint, and depending on the construction of the light and if the assembly is not potted in epoxy it should be able to be reflowed with a soldering iron. good luck.
