SW-Motech luggage rack and Soft Luggage adapter
05/15/13 8:25 AM

Hey all. Just thought I would post a few pics up of a new luggage system I installed yesterday. It's the SW-Motech Alu-rack with a quick release Soft Luggage adapter. Took about an hour to install. Pretty easy job. The bag is a 36-39 expandable Roll bag with Andy Strapz holding it in place. Whole kit cost about $370.00AUS. Very happy with it. Couldn't justify the costs on a hard luggage system as this will only be left on for long trips/touring which accounts for about 10% of my riding. No idea why the pictures are sideways but, anyway, you get the idea.

Cheers

G'day Martin
Yeah some links would have been helpful....sorry about that. Got the Motech stuff from www.motorradgarage.com.au
They were awesome.Very quick with postage considering they are based in Western OZ. They have the full range of Motech gear. The bag ( TM Motorcycle Luggage Route 66 Deluxe Roll Bag) and straps I got from Motorcycles accessories Supermarket who are based in Sydney. They have an online store but don't seem to keep it up to date as most of the gear I looked at in store wasn't listed. I looked at getting my gear from OS but by the time freight was added into the cost, it just blew out. Infact the Motorradgarage prices were the same as many of the US based web companies. The great thing abou this setup is that if I ever do decide to go down the Hard Luggage route the Motech rack is compatible with Givi, Shad, Coocase, Trax, etc with the addition of the appropriate adapter. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Just an update on my baby. Getting her ready for a trip in July so the luggage situation needed addressing. Went with the soft luggage option to begin with but decided to bite the bullet and get a hard topbox. After much research and head scratching I finally decided on the Kappa 44Lt Monokey K961N Topbox. Thought about the Givi but couldnt justify the money considering I won't be using it that often. Plus, since it comes out of the Givi factory, the quality is very good for the money. Was concerned about the styling of it but I dont think it looks that bad once fitted.

Great posts @svscott, read this today and rang the dude, had the moto in stock so grabbed it and he suggested I try another local (I live in Perth), so ended up getting a 30L Hepco Becker with a back rest - will install tomorrow and post a couple of pics - cheers dude :)

Another inexpensive top box option is Bestem. Since this is mostly an Oz thread,
Bestem AU sells them at $87.00AU which is quite a steal in my humble opinion.

http://www.bestem.com.au/T-Box-929-46-Ltr_c_153.html - Bestem AU T-Box ( 46 litre).
The price includes an adapter plate, backrest, and lights.

This Bestem is a 35ltr. model that comes in gloss or flat black. I've used it for years on several bikes.
My homebuilt ZX14R top rack rests on the pillion which restricts carrying a passenger, but also allows the top box
to carry heavy loads. Overhanging commercial top racks have a very limited load capacity.

Narrow but tall ... On the Aprilia

It handles precious cargo as well. Another fine Colorado ale !

Streetracer,

The pannier and top racks are an integrated unit requiring 2 bolts and 2 clamps for install and removal. The SS bolts attach at the passenger footpegs and the clamps attach at the grab handle. The pannier racks can be attached alone, but the top rack cannot. It would be easy enough to make a separate top rack as I've done with the Aprilia (see attached). On the ZX14R I use a tail bag and/or tank bag when not using the pannier racks.

The pannier rack adapter plates are homebuilt using HDPE plastic with SW-Motech (for Givi) connectors.
The pannier racks are 7/8" aluminum tubing and the top rack supports are 1/8" aluminum plate. The aluminum
is bolted to the adapter plates. The top rack adapter plate is by Givi. Everything is coated with Plasti-Dip.

Pannier racks, top rack, and optional luggage rack for carrying a folding bicycle in a large hardside suitcase.

ZX14R Pannier racks minus top rack. It take about 5 minutes to install / remove

Stand alone top rack on the Aprilia using a Bestem adapter plate and some aluminim plate.
Unlike the ZX14R, I drilled and bolted through the Grab handle rather than clamping.

Folding bicycle case, or the worlds largest top box (32"X12"X21")

Werks, that is a seriously great setup.
As I mentioned at the start of this thread I was getting setup for a big trip and as it turned out I needed both bags anyway for all my crap! This ended up being a really secure, quick packing system.
Cheers Scott

Thanks... I think.
The ZedXpress is a great sport touring bike, it's just that only a few of us know it

I like your setup. I only mentioned Bestem as it's a good top box at a great price ... especially compared to most hard bag prices in Oz!

Thanks Werks !!!

No problem ! If you need detailed build pics, let me know.

Finally fitted the gear today. Not unhappy with the result. Would prefer none of it but better than a corbin seat and back rest set up that was ~$1k and more than 3 months wait...:(

Hepco & Becker 30L top box & Backrest ~$106
SW-Motech rack ~$219

Box fits a helmet, tho preferably a good 6 pack :)

Nice top box at a great price! I've had 4 Corbins over the years. Excellent saddle but 1K is overpriced.
The OEM saddle is actually pretty good.

Seeing as we're showing off luggage, this is my setup. SW Motech quick release racks and Givi V35 panniers. $300 for the racks and $450 for the panniers. I was originally going to copy Werks' setup with the 21 litre panniers, but I needed the space of the big V35s. I also like the way they wrap around the tail.

Have been on the road for a week now and have done about two thousand miles of the best twisty roads in Australia, as well as a few hundred miles of dirt roads and some pretty shitty farm tracks. I'm not convinced you need an R1200GS to have an adventure. I have another three weeks of riding every day to go before I get home.

I've got the RHS pannier full of clothes and the LHS one full of ipad/wash bag/books/camera/rain suit and other junk. I also have a USB charging socket in the LHS one.

I think they look alright. They're very easy to use, don't affect cornering once you get used to them and are stable up to around 200kph. Would recommend the setup to anyone. You do need to lower or ditch the stock pipes to fit them.

Americans won't know where this is, but it's like Daytona, only better.

Beautiful pics! But ya know, there is the odd American that has heard of the mount panorama circuit and the wrecks at hells corner. I even like the fact that the finish line is prior to pit row, so if you pit ur last lap is considered complete. Beautiful track.

Hey Mate, I'm about to go with the setup you're using... I also have the Yoshi's on my monster. Did you need to do any adjusting of the muffler height with the Yoshi's, or was it straight on? Im also going with the Givi v47 topcase with backrest and SW Moto Alu-Rack...

Cheers!
