Sensors...How do they sense ??
12/13/12 5:01 PM

Front and rear wheels have sensors. I assume they sense the difference in speed of the wheels and cut engine power in response. What happens when the rear tire is worn and the diameter changes which changes wheel speed? Or when you replace the rear tire with a new one that may be a different diameter? Can anyone explain the sensors and how they function ??? Thanks !!!!

My common sense tells me the software package of the ECU is tolerant of tire diameter changes due to wear. If you follow the OEM recommendation and use 50mm aspect ratio tires the minimum and maximum diameters are constant; and the software is prepared for that.

Change to 55mm, or change the final drive ratio, and you might induce a situation where the ECU has difficulties reconciling this new, strange input.

Drivability could very well suffer... until we learn to reprogram the traction control portion of the ECU.

I am currently running a 55 profile rear tyre with no apparent problems, so as Hagrid says it looks like the sensors have an operating range. As has been posted here and elsewere, a problem with changing front sprocket sizes is a known problem.
