Sheesh...anyone know how many rear sprockets a guy can run before he needs a front?I'm thinkin...like tires ya know...maybe two to one?Shit...I think I need a case hardened rear on this bad girl;)And I've been very good about cleaning/lubing/ and adjusting my chain.More than any other bike.Any ideas guys?She's a steel Sunstar 42 right now.I mean...she's not like...'beyond' using...not yet...but I can see the tell tale signs that she's not 'quite' as well shaped toothwise as a new one.Yeebers...seems like I just replaced it...actually been around 5K miles.

Stop using aluminum. In reality bud you should be replacing both sprockets and chains as a set. It may possibly be your front is wore out which cause your chain to wear into its shape therefor causing your rear to wear out so quickly. I could be wrong.

It's a Sunstar Steel.Factory replacement.I need to get in there and check the front as well...thanks.No way am I gonna go for all three at once...the chain is fine....I can tell that.

I some how managed to bend my stock rear. No idea how that happened, I've never made it too tight and always kept the lack with in spec. But I keep running it for now because with that being bent I'm sure the front is prob messed up by now too and I can't afford all three at the moment anyway... Oops. If you come across a good steel sprocket let me know cause I'd like to switch over to steel for the durability.

i like aluminum rear sprockets fine for my bike but I believe there might be significant wear caused when sprockets and chain are not all changed at one time. I replaced my rear sprocket this year. I had to adjust the wheel forward so the old chain would fit the new sprocket. Seems like that new sprocket wore down very rapidly to mate to the chain. I was adjusting it every 500 miles. Now that the rear axle is adjusted to the same position as it was with the old sprocket, the wear seems to have slowed way down. It's like the chain and front sprocket remembered the old rear sprocket and forced the new rear sprocket to be the same as the old. I don't think I need to change it right away but I would not be surprised if I get much less mileage out of it. The old one got 10K. I do not know if the rapid wear was mostly chain stretch or sprocket wear. Perhaps both 50/50.

Rear sprockets are cheap so no biggy if they get changed often from running with and old chain. Fronts are a lot of work to change and so are chains which are also a bit expensive. If the countershafty sprocket and the chain are close to being used up, might as well change the whole shebang. If not, expect to be changing stuff a lot more frequently.

I have never heard of someone wearing out a steel sprocket in 5000 miles EVER. People with turbo bikes I know and romans can maybe chime in here to, but if the turbo riders are fine with steel sprockets longer than 5000 miles. You with wearing out steel sprockets in 5000 miles and going thru tires in under 2000 miles, something doesn't add up, or you ride at mostly full throttle for over 97% of the time???? I've been around bikes for a longgggg time and never ever seen people gone thru tires and now sprockets like you say you do.......EVER. Hell cblast drives like a manic on his bike and he as well over 5000 miles and i'm pretty sure he is fine with his sprockets. I put an alum. sprocket on mine very early on and mine bike has 7200 miles on it and they look mint. Granted my chain is also set up really good and I keep it lubed and cleaned, but even if I didn't it should be fine. I remember when I always order alum sprockets from my friends race shop I always ask if it's still ok, even did when I ordered for my new 14R, and he always says he has drag racers with built and nitro engines and he has turbo busa's order them that he works on thruout the years and he rarely needs to change out the rear sprockets because people usally sell the bikes long before they get to the mileage to wear them out. Long story short, if you are really going thru a steel sprocket in 5000 miles something is really wrong with your setup. Anybody who really knows bike's would agree.

To be wearing out stuff at that rate it sounds like adjustmenst or alignment problems to me. I would have to side with zx on this as I run aluminum and don't have to change very often at all I get great mileage out of them. Check out wheel alignment, axle torque, and chain adjustment to start when you get new stuff on there.

Well..I should probably clarify...'worn'.Okay....the teeth look fine...except you can tell the angles are not sharp like a new one.You look at a new one...see those 'cut' edges...on each tooth?Sharp angled edges.Mine have a smoothed appearance...the trough is okay...and the contact edge where the chain link sits is fine...so...in reality...they are still okay.I have a habit however of replacing those BEFORE the teeth wear down to a sharp point on the tips.I'm sure anyone could still use my sprockets when I replace em.They're not hooked or anything.The drive chain and all is aligned.That's not an issue.I do however ride fairly aggressive.Lots of downshifts and upshifts at strong rpms.I keep the chain slack at the factory limit(s).I check it frequently.AS well as clean the chain with Kerosine about every 700 miles,or less..and lube about every 400 miles...or less.

I don't wait for the teeth to wear down...probably why I don't need to replace the chain...maybe once in 40K miles on my 07.But this bike as we know has a lot more torque and thrust.Sa'll good...just wanted to get some other views on this...Thanks all;)No way would an Aluminum sprocket last with my riding style.I already know that.

Anyone have good mileage with that 'supersprox' steel rear sprocket?


Checked out their website...looks good those rears.Think I'll go with it this time out.Change the front out as well...the chain?It looks new to me.

Just put a 43 and back to 42 on mine. Did not touch front.
Green you have to expect some wear on the front remember how you drive Bruz!

I got my new sprocket on Friday. I got the Supersprox Stealth 42T rear sprocket. I had one on my 07 too and loved it. It has a gold billet center and a black steel outer, so wearing is not as big of an issue like alloy ones. It was a little difficult to find, but worth the effort IMO. Just my preference.

I run a supersprox sprocket on my bike. I've only put 3000 miles on it but it still looks like new. Granted my 07 isn't capable of punishing it like your bike could, but I certainly don't baby it. Looks cool as well. The aluminum part has a slightly rough or machined finish and can be a pain in the arse to keep looking perfect.

Anyone have good mileage with that 'supersprox' steel rear sprocket?

All last year I used the spray-on chain wax with DuPont Teflon. At the end of the season my final drive was at least 50% dead.

Over the winter I installed a new OEM front, a SuperSprox rear, and a RK chain. This year I'm using chainsaw bar oil. I've ridden ~8000 miles so far and the final drive looks like it has 85% life remaining.

My Pilot Road 3s made it 4000 miles instead of the normal 3000-3500. I'm spooning a new set on tomorrow. They're probably going to be the best I can do.

When I changed out my OEM sprocket to Supersprox on my 07 at about 10,000 kms, everything looked new. I ended up with 26,000 kms on it and neither the chain or sprockets showed any wear at all. I use Maxima chain wax every tank or two, and clean about once a season. Admittedly I did very little wet weather riding. I'm sticking with the same combination and regime on my 2013.

Sounds good...My chain looks new,feels new....but the sprockets will be changed out once this rear is down a bit more.Thanks guys for the input...good info!
