Alittle soon, but zx14r turbo?
04/09/12 3:14 PM

I know some people are gonna look at me crazy.. But after seeing a couple turboed 14s at our friendly get together I'm interested as to see where this bike will stand with alittle bit of boost. Depending on what little more info I can find out a friend of mine will be custom fabbing a turbo set-up for this bike. He has done several busas one being his own and his skills aren't a question.

I know with the raised compression it's not going to be that turbo friendly.. But I'm only looking at maybe 3-5 pound of boost. 5 being on the high side of course.. I'm also not wanting to do anything to the internals of the motor just kinda want to turbo and ride out, and being that this thing is already making stupid power 3 pounds will be decently up there..

Feel free to put in any comments concerns, call me retarded, ect.. anything I should look out for and resources I'd need to use. I do realize this bike is extremely new and not a lot of stuff out for it to support a turbo set up.. But it'd still be cool to be one of the few ppl with a turboed R!

Oh hell, NO! there's turboed Gen 1s making way more hp than the 14r so it is only right that there should be a turboed r out there. I wouldn't pussyfoot around with anything too small. You will want more. I'd go for as much boost as possible w/o engine building. Might as well make sure you can upgrade to a stage 3 when the bike gets a few thousand miles and you are ready to start spending some $$ on some big chunky rods and stuff.

The compression shouldn't be an issue. They lowered the Gen1 compression to accommodate turbo so you can lower yours a tad too. I'm sure they just put a fatter spacer under the head and adjust the timing accordingly.

Really what I would do is get a good full system on there and wait to see what turbo kits come out for the 14r. You just know they are working on them right now. You'll see them available in the next 8 months I bet.

Ehh I'm not a full fan of these kits.. They are overpriced IMO and I can be assured the quality with a custom kit. As far as pushing the motor, That's not what I'm wanting to do until I get some real world data on what these things can handle. It's more of take baby steps and see what it can do, besides! Once it's turboed that just opens the doors!

A&A Performance never produced the rumored ZX14 supercharger kit, maybe they will make one for the ZX14R?

Nothing crazy about boosting your 14, I boosted my 06 a couple years ago, best thing I've ever done I'm curious to see how a 14R responds to boost. My 06 is all stock motor wise, including full compression. I'm running 8lbs of boost with no timing pulled and run VP 100 octane street blaze fuel when I plan on boosting hard. The map came with the kit off an identical 14 and was making 270-280 rwhp I believe. All I can say is its vicious fast. I think even with the 14R's barely higher compression you could run more than 3lbs of boost safely. That wouldn't keep you entertained for long anyway....trust me lol. I would think 6-7 with a little timing pulled and GOOD fuel ALL the time would be okay. I bet it would be close to 300 or more on 7lbs with a bone stock motor and stage 1 kit. I know that Brocks first gen exhausts also fit the 14R, I wonder if a first gen turbo kit would mostly bolt up? I think the parts that matter are all the same?
Also higher compression isn't all bad with boost, you just have to run less boost, but you get the same power as a low compression motor running way more boost, plus you keep the strong low end that low compression motors lose. My 14 off boost is just as strong as a normal flies out 06....which is VERY strong. You drop the compression and you have a bike with weak low end till the boost kicks in. Thats why I purposely left the compression up.
You can't run a turbo bike mercilessly hard like a stocker tho if thats how you like to ride, you have to remember the bike wasn't designed to handle 300hp stock. They're tough, but everything has limits. I don't do long pulls on mine, but then again it accelerates so fast there really isn't such a thing as a long pull unless you're running the salt flats I don't do extended top end runs either, those can be motor killers. But for typical riding my turbo has been flawless. One warning tho, once you go boost, nothing normally aspirated is going to thrill you anymore, its like a tattoo....no going back lol.

Hey Big D, glad to hear from you It doesn't look like you've upgraded to the new 14R yet, I'd thought you'd be all over that baby! It does look like you've made some sweet improvements to your 08 tho. But where's the busa love? lol. I remember trying to talk you out of getting the busa and getting a liter bike instead....lotta good that did I think the new 14 is going to be King for quite a while to come

....well, I'm trying to stay away. Sat on a couple yesterday....and today, I went back. They yelled at me. sittin' on the bikes too much.

After all I've done I really like my old 14 too much to give it up yet. oooooo, wait until you see pics with the Carros. I'm waiting until I get my mods done and then it's showtime! Think I am going to go with a simple NOS and then call it done. Then we will see about the busa. Really needs some sprucing up.

I'm not giving up any of my old bikes but I really want a little track bike. Here, check out my vid embedded on this thread. About ten posts down.

Good to hear about your turbo experience, 3 pounds will be just starters and I'll eventually work my way up. Most likely I'll be running 93 all the time as I still wish to daily ride it. I'm really excited to see how this will progress in the next couple of months
