What soap do you wash your bike with?
03/08/11 10:43 PM

I was washing my bike today and was thinking what soap do you all wash your bikes with?

I use Glipton.

If you wax your bike, the dishsoap will strip the wax off. So if you want it stripped, then ok, but it's a little harsh for paint. I use any car wash, with a little Griot's speed shine mixed in, and my bare hand or microfiber. When I sold my black '94 ZX11 at 14 years old, it looked better than new because of that wash and a good waxing a couple times a year. Not a swirl, or scratch.

Combined with the AI work being done in the USA, 15 years is about right.

I used blue Coral for the first 3 years. Nothing special, I don't think. Just automotive soap. Picked up a bottle of pink Meguires soap late last fall. Same sort of stuff, I'm sure. I wouldn't be too particular as long as it is a soap for automotive finishes and made by a co you recognize. I have repeatedly heard that Dawn dish soap will remove wax. It def does a much better job on greasy dishes than any other dish soaps so the I can see it taking down a wax coat almost as easily. (denatured alcohol is the best thing to remove wax, I hear).

Do invest in microfiber cloths to wash and dry.

My 08 is getting a smoother finish from using ICE Liquid Claybar once a year. It is a gentle abrasive so it does remove a tiny bit of the top coat but it does wonders on swirls. If you really rub, for a prolonged time, you will notice a more level and mirror-like surface. Follow up with ICE paste polish and the finish will be perfect. New swirls are inevitable but the old ones are gone for ever.

I use any car wash, with a little Griot's speed shine mixed in, and my bare hand or microfiber. When I sold my black '94 ZX11 at 14 years old, it looked better than new because of that wash and a good waxing a couple times a year. Not a swirl, or scratch.

What dose the Griots do? A mild abrasive?

Eagle NanoWash, NanoPolymer Wax. Not that it matters, its like an oil thread, to take a cue from Dogo.

I'm at work, or I'd post a video of bike wash babes at the Hooters Bike Wash last summer.

Rook; "What dose the Griots do? A mild abrasive?"
Speed shine is the opposite. It's a lubricant to help reduce swirls and scratches. You can also use it as a waterless wash, but I've never tried. They don't list it as an additive to a soap, but in their tips they say to use it that way, and I love the way my microfiber mitt slides with no resistance. I wax my bike twice a year with a quality carnuba, spring and fall, and it's always garaged.

Do I need to post that gif in this thread too?

Bike wash, huh? Waterless wash, usually Meguiar's, only here. I think I've tried just about all of them. Most of the cheap brands leave residue. Meguiars's is reasonably priced and does not.

Ditto on the Zaino product! Out of all of the ones I have used it out shines them all (I made pun)! More convincing was the number of people not looking so much at your bike but at them self's.

Sounds like the stuff in the pink and black spray can currently called ORIGINAL BIKE SPIRITS. The name changes every year or two but the label colors are always pink and black. I use the stuff between water washes ane it works great. Not the thing I like when the bike gets caught in the ran or a 400 miles of getting pelted with bugs. Great for an occasional shine up and it doesn't seem to harm the paste polish coat that I apply every 2 months or so.

I just use Eagle 1 Truck Wash for my bike and truck, but my bike only gets "washed" few times a year - I keep her clean and slick with the Eagle 1 spray detailer between baths

Black1; I've been using Griots for years. After stripping the wax, using a clay bar, and then their show wax with a random orbital on my 18 yr old car, it looked like a jet black mirror, and it only took a few hours. The guy I bought it from years ago couldn't believe I didn't paint it. Not the best stuff out there, but a complete line, easy to use, and a decent price.

HEY hellmut mentioned Eagle 1 Truck Wash i CAN SAY for once im rapt with another kind probably similar to it "CT18 Truck Wash" seeing is believing, this plauge of Locusts inside my Fairing openings stunned me when I took them off to do the "black" mesh inlays,I've bin meaning to get this splatter shit thats been on since Dec 5 off !( shown in cops stories im another statistic dec 5 ) yes its slack of me but I've a good reason for not cleaning it sooner this is before the CT18 DONT FORGET i FIND IT HARD TO MOVE AROUND ! IT MADE EASY WORK OUT OF BAKED ON CRAP EVEN FOR ME THE TOP COWL WAS WASHED FIRST,by the time I did every thing else most parts had dried out it almost didn't need a clear rinse after! my petrol head mate Goody told me about this as it's all he has ever used! so thanks Goody I USED A SPRAY Bottle first then ten minutes later a bucket/soft paintbrush for the tight areas with a cloth , no hose or didn't use my pressure wash at all !
