Ride Report... 1877 Miles
06/09/13 7:09 AM

I thought I would pass this on.

I just got back from an 1877 mile ride from Ohio to Robbinsville, NC. I left on the 2nd and got back on the 7th. The only comfort mods I have are Genmar risers and a put on a 2012 Concours seat right before I left. Drive time and miles are, by google 6 hrs 14 mins / 375 miles, and that was counting the drive time to get through the Dragon to get to Robbinsville.

The ride was as good as it could have been for riding on interstate the whole way. We planned taking back roads all the way but figured 10 hours on an untested bike/rider combination was not a good option at that point, and we only rode interstate on the way back because by friend pulled a back muscle and he was in pain, so we hauled ass back to Ohio... in fact we dropped about an hour off our return trip. ;)

We averaged about 200 miles a day. Some were more. The only complaints I had about me are, my neck and throttle wrist was sore to the touch, but only one particularly long day. I do my best to keep weight off my wrists but I guess I failed that night.

As for the bike, while on the Dragon unless I was hanging off the side the bike really fought me to stand up. If I leaned off even just the smallest amount (and I stopped fighting it) the 14 just slung around the corners. FYI, riding the Dragon with wet roads, not so much fun.

I can say the Cherohala was a frigging blast! I disliked that road on my VTX but loved it on the 14. I was making myself proud. I wasn't dragging knee but I was moving. And to append that thought, if you go to that area of the world, go the week after Memorial day during the week. I think we saw 2 cops the whole time, but on the way out on Friday around noon we saw 5, and 3 were heading into the deals gap.

I will attach some pics, just to prove I was there :)

Does the Concours 14 seat fit with no modifications?

Still breaking in my bike. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Pep,
Yes the seat fits great. The only thing you will have to do is transfer the hardware over to the seat you want to use from your stock seat. A total of 3 nuts and the hardware pieces themselves, a total 5 mins or less. The seat will lift you up some as it is a thicker seat. The genmars I have on compensated for the and the extra distance from your butt to the pegs is a nice bonus on long rides. I think I read that any year after 08 will work with our bikes.

And thanks for the complements guys. FYI I averaged 41.5 mpg for the entire trip and averaged around 90 mph down and back... With a high triple digit peak :-). With no cars around of course.

Also the only luggage I took was this tail bag. I fit a weeks worth of clothes and everything else I needed in it. I did Use my bungee net on top of it for a sweatshirt and rain coat. And it does expand but I was able to pack with out expanding it.

If you are looking for a cheap cruise control there is always a the cat o ring, may be a little ghetto for most 14 owners though. I use one of these on the bandit, works fine.

Awesome man... enjoy! We stayed a place in Robbinsville NC, south on 129 until you get there... called The Dragons Rest. Nice little cabins, covered bike parking, large fire pit, gas grills... etc. and only 6 cabins and 1 house that will accommodate up to 8. so there are not a lot of people milling around. Nice secluded area.

be safe.

That was in a little town called Bulls Gap, TN. Its where my buddies family was originally from. Here is a little factoid for you, that place was called Gilleys and before they close it had a signature on the wall from Doc Holiday.

I am not a Harley guy but have said for years that I would love to rehab that building (its pretty big and has another floor below that you can kind of see if you look at the side of the building) and turn it into a "Whistle Stop Harley" and make the top back into a hotel, and showroom / restaurant in the 1st floor, repair shop on the bottom... I really think it would be cool to contract a "tour" train to come by and take people for rides as well. Hence the name "Whistle Stop"

:)

Now I just need $750K to make it happen ;)
