Castration
01/18/11 10:49 PM

I am looking at buying a 06 ZX14 (BLUE). This isn't my first bike I had a 954rr with about 3k in the motor performance dept. Also, had a GXSR 1000, and the curve ball a Vulcan 1500cc.

I hated the cruiser...obvious. Loved the sport bikes, but for me they were just too lite. I live quite a ways from town and traveling on the highway (36 highway) I get blown all over the place. I want something that is more suitable for touring and highway driving. But I DO NOT want a cruiser! I am not that old yet!

Anyways, I am pretty set on buying the ZX14 but am slightly nervous about the bike being too spunky!

You guys will eat this one up I am sure. I am curious as to possible ways to castrate the ZX14? Please do not tell me what a pansy I am, that is not beneficial. :)

The '06 is "castrated" below 6000rpms, unless the secondaries have been removed. Have you ridden the bike? If you have, and think the bike is "too spunky", put on an 18t counter sprocket. Still too spunky? Buy a Busa.

You buy the 14....after you've had er about...oh...ten minutes...you soon realize"Hey,more speed Captain".Seriously...you will enjoy the stock version just fine.Simple throttlebody mods will enhance the low end, along with a Powercommander to remap the lower 5,000 rpm range.Voila!A sportier 14 will emerge. But the stock is plenty doable. It won't be too much for ya.And ya won't get blown all over the place either!

Thanks for the thoughts guys! I knew this site was gonna be beneficial for me to join.

I actually bought and sold all three of those bikes last summer, just trying to find something that I was happy on. The 954rr and GXSR1000 just felt so lite and small, hurting my lower back and wrists. The Vulcan was a beautiful bike, had added some chrome etc, but it too hurt my lower back.

No dealership around here is too fond of me jumping on a bike and taking it for a spin... has something to do with the fact that I am 21 (YIKES!) , I know. I live life like a 30 or 40 yr. old though. Work 50+ hrs a week, going to school full time...so I'd consider myself somewhat responsible.

What are some of you guys seeing as far as average fuel economy? I am assuming another "newbie" question. But it is something to consider being as gas is on its way to $5.00 a gallon around here.

Mileage can range anywhere from about 2mpg to about 40mpg. It all depends on how you ride it.

280kilometers is roughly 174miles. With the ZX14 having a 5.8 gallon tank or 22 liters that equals out to 30 miles to the gallon or 12.7 Kilometers to the liter. (these figures would all be accurate if member bean07 was out of fuel/petroleum at 280 kilometers)

30 mpg is more than adequate compared to my lifted half ton truck that gets 13.1!!!!

..."buy a busa"... to f'n funny.

I get about 35mpg and I play a little.

Most important thing to check is cost of insurance. A lot of people can't afford it!

Incredibly enough All State quoted me $600 a year for FULL COVERAGE on my potential purchase. Crazy, I know.

I looked at the Busa pretty hardcore. I have an Arctic Cat Thundercat 1000cc ATV that I am selling, and a guy tried to trade me an 08 Busa with 1900 miles even up... Didn't do it...

Here is something else I should ask. The bike I am looking at is a 2006 ZX14 in Blue with only 250 miles on it. These are a true 250 miles, no funny business. The gentleman bought it and got sick... he is asking $6800. What do you all think?

$6800 for a "new" 14 seems good to me. Did you look on NADA?

NADA is at $6,220.00

KBB is $5,940.00 but that is considered to be a bike with over 10,000 miles on it!

So how in the world do you price a bike with 250 miles on it!?!?

If I didn't have my 09 ($10,500 with 0 miles took me awhile to get it down!) And I had the funds, I'd do it.

Bean07 35 miles per gallon would be the equivalent of 14.88 Kilometers per liter. Sorry bean07 I tried to be clear, but apparently I wasn't.
