Honestly, people HAVE tapped into the coolant system and ran lines through-out gear to act as heat.
I'm in Northern Canada, you simply can't have too much heat. Heated grips are a must, and a vest makes all the difference in the world - allowing you get away with non-windproof gear as well.
Some people make their own heated gear, it is really quite easy. You just carefully open up anything you want to electrify, and then 'glue' in a zig-zag of that special wiring through-out. You figure out wattage draw through length, and you can put smart pots on different circuits to tweak. It really isn't that big of a deal. Heated gloves are tricky, and expensive to buy. I prefer sport gloves for feel so I always go with grips, although when things get really cold (and your hands are out in the wind with an LSL kit *cough*) the grips may burn your palms but your hands will still be numb. That is when you have to start wearing serious gloves, and swap out accordingly.
