My sportbike is on its way....that's something I've wanted to say for a long time and equally happy and surprised to say it. I grew up on the other side of the planet; a child of the 80s. 99.99% of the motorcycles in my town were 50-70cc Hondas; utterly utilitarian and used to transport entire families from point A to B. My dad had a late-60s Vespa, which in retrospect, I wish he still did. Us kids LOVED riding on the back (and front) of it.

So until I was 9, I thought dirt bikes were the coolest things on wheels because of their uniqueness AND those glorious fender gaps. Then sport bikes started slowly showing up in my town and quickly overtook my imagination. Such beasts...though ridden by utter squids. There were may be less than 10 in the whole city but they were always everywhere; blasting down the highways at triple digits; parked prominently at strip malls for us kids to gawk over. But I don't think there was a single unblemished fairing between them (being ridden by squids and all). Kawi ZX11 showed up in the early 90s (I think only 1 in the city), as did Honda CBRs and Yamaha FZRs. All sent down from motorcycle heaven, as far as my teenage brain could comprehend.

When I came to the States for college in late 90s, my singular goal was to buy a sportbike, ANY sport bike. Honda Interceptors were hot those days. And then...Hayabusa was introduced. BLEW MY DAMN MIND! Good thing I was a very poor college kid or I may not be alive today. I bought bike mags and devoured pics and stats of the Busa, GSXRs and everything else. I still have them all.

College, grad school, employment, marriage, kids...then came time to buy a bike. That was a decade ago. Of course I wanted a 'Busa. Started a thread on sportbike forums asking if it was a good choice for a total newbie. You can probably guess what everyone said. But you what you may not guess is that I actually listened (I was a new dad...so of course I did). I also went and sat on one at a local dealer and found how cramped my out-of-shape 6'3" frame felt on it. Took my training class from MSF and got licensed.

I started looking at small muscle cruisers and settled on the Suzuki M50. Bought it used and loved the ride. Wanted to upgrade within months and bought something far too inappropriate for a newbie, a Yamaha Raider. 1900cc of abject terror in cruiser form (hey I was a newb, what did I know?) with enough torque to ride straight up a wall. A raked-out-from-the-factory, unwieldy beast in most hands.

I still have it. It's been my only bike for almost a decade and I've never crashed. I'm a survivor.

You see, I am level-headed and that kept me alive. I am also VERY lucky. I had not one or two, but FOUR unintended mid-corner lane departure excursions while riding the gazillion beautiful mountain roads we have here around Denver. Not once was a car in the other lane though (dumb luck). And one of those incidents put me in the soft dirt shoulder by my own lane but the bike and I somehow stayed upright.

I was scared and way over my head with the bike. So my riding volume went way down for a full year until I felt ready to pick it back up. I did fine the next year and put a lot of miles on the bike. But I knew I needed help. So I signed up for a local track day class with Nick Ienatasch, the author, former racer, and current chief instructor of Yamaha Championship Riding Schools. Helluva guy and a great instructor. I was the only cruiser-riding moron in the class and caused plenty of chuckles when I arrived. But glad I did.

I learned trail-braking, threshold braking and MOST IMPORTANTLY for me, proper body positioning from Nick. Surprisingly, all those YouTube videos hadn't taught me much.

I love my Raider and ride it in the mountains every weekend and during snowy months, the curvy country roads. Out long before kids wake up and back not long after they do. In the past 2-3 years, I noticed I had been riding it more and more like a sportbike. It seems I can only take the right "street" line through a curve, and feel comfortable doing so, if my inside knee is sticking out and weight is positioned to the inside, with my helmet staying vertically outside the bars.

So the sportbike bug, alive but dormant since childhood, crept up again. Combine that with the fact that I lost 70 lbs, and my waist went from 42 to 34 in the past 3 years, with greater core strength, and suddenly I felt more comfortable sitting on the 'Busa in the dealership. But I have admired the ZX for a long time too and sitting on both bikes back-to-back, there was no contest, the ZX was far more comfortable. Reading up on it over the past 2 years, I also learned of its technical superiority over the 'Busa. The 3 traction modes, 2 power modes, and ABS are EXACTLY what I need to get myself used to the very concept of sport bikes and the power they wield.

I'm also re-taking Nick's track class next month so he can point out my mistakes and help me get used to the sport bike posture. Later this year, or early next, I will take his longer class too (full day, advanced track training, max lean, etc.) once I am fully comfortable on the street.

And now back to the beginning...my sportbike is on its way! Assembled/prepped yesterday by Bellevue Motorsports in Washington and being picked up in the next hour to head to Colorado, with stops in San Fran, San Diego and Phoenix along the way, so it will get here in 7-10 days. But hey it is coming!

So here's the main event. My questions:

- Bar risers: What is the max thickness I can use without having to re-route the wires/cables? I see both 1" and 1.25" available and some research suggests both are close to the OEM windshield but don't rub while some people say the 1.25" do rub. Which is it? And besides Helibars, it appears BlackPath is quite well-known as well, correct? I do not want to install the solid handlebar; I don't like the look on a sportbike.

- Lowered Pegs: Knight Designs seems to be universally liked. Are they wide-enough to accommodate bigger feet (size 13, width E for me) well-enough? I don't expect them to be cruiser-comfy just better than stock.

- Higher Seat: I won't do this immediately (unlike the above 2) but I read that the Concours seat is a direct swap for ours. Does the rear pillion cover fit over it for would it need to permanently stay off? If the latter, I might instead look at getting the OEM seat filled-in and re-upholstered to add some height.

- Conspicuity Lighting: I am a safety-conscious, ATGATT-believing rider. On the Raider, I have a set of small (1" OD) fork-mounted LED conspicuity lights connected to a special controller by Skene Designs that buzzes them ever so slightly to make them appear as though they are "vibrating". It helps stand out in a car driver's peripheral vision. I intend to do the same on the ZX. Have any of you done so? Is there a good mounting position on our forks? Do our bikes have a pre-wired switch for front lights or did you wire yours to the headlight?

- Taillight: How bright is the factory LED taillight? Is it plenty for traffic behind you? On the Raider, I have a brake light modulator which flashes the OEM LED taillight 3 times before going steady, each time I brake. It really gets drivers' attention, especially while approaching me from behind at a traffic light. I will do that at the minimum on the ZX, but in your opinion, if the light itself can use an upgrade in brightness, I'll skip that and get the BlasterX taillight. It is quite affordable, uses the OEM Kawi housing, but replaces the circuit board and LEDs with its own set which has the modulator built in (plus other features). Is anyone here using it?

- Frame sliders: There are far too many options online; a mind-numbing array. Forum search came up with very old threads. Which ones do you guys trust and use today? I know they are mostly useless while in motion, but for a mild tip over in the garage, I am sure they'd be handy.

- Tank Grip: Techspec Snakeskin seems to be pretty well liked but they have 2 and 3-piece options. Did you replace your OEM center piece with Techspec? I need to get used to the idea of grabbing the tank sides with my knees so these are mandatory for me.

- Thicker Throttle Grips?: Is there such an option for the ZX? I couldn't find anything online. On the Raider, I had a set of pads that slide over the smooth OEM grips but with the ZX having textured grips, that isn't likely to work. Any other options?

- Chain Maintenance: I am a DIY nerd and do all my own maintenance (and make all my own mistakes). But this whole "chain drive" thing is new to me after being used to the Raider's awesome belt drive. Again, there are far too many lube options online. Are there ones you recommend? What else should I get (a brush I believe)? I know regular maintenance is critical to maximize chain life. There seem to be automatic lubers on the market too. I want to stay away from those since I'd rather get up close with the chain routinely and do it myself.

- Race Stands or Center Stand: I have a powered lift table for the bikes but the cruiser-friendly flat-top bike jack I use on it won't work on the ZX. Do you guys prefer race stands or the OEM center stand? Searching here tells me the center stand isn't compatible with most aftermarket exhausts which isn't too bad for me because I don't intend to upgrade anytime soon. And they come in handy away from home, but is there any other advantage? Will I lose the side stand if I install the OEM center stand? Does it sag over time and start dragging in corners?

I found plenty of info/pictures here about luggage and will be figuring out my options soon. I also found a source for the reprinted factory service manual on these forums and will be ordering one soon.

If you've read all of this, I applaud your perseverance. If you can think of anything else I missed above but might want to be aware of, please let me know. Thank you.

And here's where the ZX will go. The Super Cub is new too. My wife really wanted to start riding for running small errands nearby. I thought it would be a great bike to keep forever, if only for the nostalgia factor. And yes I know there is a competing banner on the wall. Need to find a ZX one:

As far as the bar risers, you can always change things up like grind the back side of your windscreen screws. Or rotate master cylinder for more clearance. I made some custom risers that are 1-1/2" x 1/2" back. I also have the Knight lowered pegs. I put some foam grip covers on for comfort. Nice Raider, I had a custom 2008.

Bar risers: are those inserts under the handlebars. No need to change out cables/hoses, etc. Took away the numbness leaned at that stock position. Worked for me.

Lowered Pegs: are an option to try, yes. You're a tall guy so work this area also. I'm a 32" inseam and I couldn't tell the difference. I'm comfortable with the current stock peg position.

Higher Seat: Again, ride the bike for awhile and see if you can adapt before making unnecessary changes.

Left Turn Lighting: For safety, look way out ahead at intersections in the distance. If you were not looking, it will collect you. Ask me how I know. Bikes are still taken out with the current models having lights on in the daytime. Be 100% on point each mile or stay off the bike. Lights my assafety.

Taillight: Look at the mirrors and have an out between cars at some stoplight. Keep a wide gap of the traffic ahead so you have enough brake distance to wake up the driver at the rear. The safety is looking at the front and rear between each mile. You're killing me, Larry!

Frame Sliders: The bike goes down, it's the front end taking the damage on the triple tweak. No slider saves a front end wrinkle.

Tank Grip: For sure a protector at the rear. My denim button rubbed a nice thin scratch that almost went thru the tank. I glued a quarter on the rub, opened my jacket one button, you might want to sit on the bike and find the rub point and pad it there. You don't have time to grab a knee with this bike. The front end came up on me today unexpectedly and that was the last thing I was thinking about.

Thick Grips: You want to be as close to this bike as possible. You want fluff, stick to the chopper, not this type bike.

Chain Main: Use gear oil. Use chain lube. Do not use WD-40. Lube every 300 miles. Wait till you find out how fast those catch up.

Center Stand: Get the OEM kit. You can pile a bunch of books on the back seat and change the front tire kind of one stand fits all is the OEM for tires and chain lube services. No race stand gets in the way of wheel work.

Welcome to the forum. I really like your story.
I am also 6'3" and I use a 1 inch riser. Very comfortable. I have stock pegs and have no problems on long rides with them. I use Grip Puppies over my stock grips. Very comfy and relieve hand cramps. I have a Concourse seat on my 06, direct swap. The solo cowl will not fit over it so I just swap seats when I want to get sporty. I currently have a Coocase rear trunk mounted on a modified V Strom rear rack. Too damn useful to take off.
You'll find the 14 will do just about everything well. Just keep an eye on your right wrist! ( if ya know what I mean)

Eray...nice Raider! Mine is stock physically except for an aftermarket front fender. Mechanically, it has Ivan's ECU flash and his PCV tune.

Hub...good input, especially on chain. I have ordered Grease Ninja and Motul Race Lube and will stick with 300 mi intervals. You are right about the seat and pegs; it seems to be the universal opinion. I am leaving them alone for now and will re-evaluate. The conspicuity lighting isn't to displace defensive riding practices, but augment them so I will get something suitable. I have ordered the Techspec tank protectors too.

Maddevill...thanks for the comments brother! And for the input on the risers; most helpful since we are the same height. I have now ordered the BP 1" black set and intend to install it before the first ride. Will try the grip puppies too. After a few weeks, I will re-evaluate the peg distance. My inseam is 34. Are you the same and can your knee tuck in under the tank?

I have a 36 inseam so you'll have more room than I do.
I did 300 miles yesterday and my only problem was my tail trunk failing
and falling off--- twice. I ended up transferring my stuff to the tank bag and
leaving it under a tree. May it RIP.

I did. As I've detailed in my questions, I had specific questions and/or points of clarification about what I had found on my own. Then there were things like OEM taillight etc that I found no info for.

Based off Hub's and others' input above, I've ordered tank grip, risers etc and decided to leave the pegs alone for now.

The bike arrived late Monday night! I only took a short ride around the neighborhood yesterday. I have a couple of questions:

- The bike is having trouble cold starting unless throttle is held at least 5% open when the starter is clicked. Then it starts immediately and idles normally. Starts without throttle assistance when engine is warm. What could cause this? Sticky throttle bodies? But on a new bike?

- Do dealers lube chain before delivery or does it come properly lubed from factory? And how slimy/greasy should a well-lubed chain feel? Mine is almost dry to touch with only a slight hint of grease by each roller seal. I am assuming this is normal but if the dealer is supposed to lube it and was careless, I need to address it.

ON a new bike it should run flawless when cold. It's fuel injected and computer controlled. It should start easily with a short touch of the button, jump to a high idle of about 1700 rpm and after a min or two settle down to the spec idle of 1150 without any help or you playing with the throttle. If it doesn't take it back to the stealership and let them start throwing parts at it under warranty.

Clean and lube your chain for peace of mind and the start of basic maintenance - every 400 miles. I use a spray bottle of cheap kerosene to get the big chunks and grime off then Motul chain cleaner and then Motul lube. Other use all sorts of different methods including Hub who has a stash of whale oil from the Henry Ford development center.

Now, wrt break in, are you by the book or drive it like you steal it from your ex-wife kind of guy??

Gotta wonder if the battery is FULLY charged after being just
bumped around the shop and short ride around the block.

I'd put on battery charger and make sure 100%

Need to install your battery tender plug anyway.

You're asking all the right questions so never hesitate to ask every little detail. It's kind of Rook Déjà vu all over again, Volume 2. (inside joke) Anyway, this quote explains itself and we want to walk out our theories as we develop them. So it starts without assist warm. It has to repeat over and over or we eliminate that scenario. Can't be the throttle body parts>> if it starts right up without sticking when warm.

Things come up like; tight (friction) new engine; cold engine; no idle cable or screw. So the idle is computer generated and said parameters are like the coolant temp, the ambient pressure affecting the sensors, and so on. The bike will start quickly eventually. One way is not to turn the key off and just hit the starter again.

No to dealer, yes to factory. Chain is manufactured with lubed rollers, pins, etc., so why lube if it's brand new. That's chain production assembly grease. What you want to look for chain wise is if they adjusted it. See, the slack is taken out of it so it does not rock back and forth in the crate when shipped. Just a precaution so that should have been addressed for sure. If not, shame on them, and now give it some slack because it's part of owning the bike. Any measurements or how-to's are in the owner's manual and follow those steps.

Now, wrt break in, are you by the book or drive it like you steal it from your ex-wife kind of guy??

The oil level is pre-measured at the factory so no need to add. Your only concern about delivery is the chain, the manual, the oil level, the mileage before you rode it, and the title. If all was done at the dealer, then it's ready to ride. Tight chain, call and get credit-for pre-delivery was not delivered correctly. Shoot the rear axle cotter pin. It's bent a certain way and that's your evidence it was never tampered with. Next is mileage. How many delivered to you? If they hee-haw'd the bike with a couple of miles on it, it could be damaged and lose oil come first service at 600 miles. If you beat it right out of the gate then oh well. But if you follow book break-in, remembered the mileage delivered, loses oil, you might have a case. So lift the bike straight up, shoot the oil level window, that's two strikes against said scenario.

Only the shutter knows for sure.

Hi guys. Been a hectic few days and didn't get a chance to post.

THANK YOU all for your input so far. To answer your questions:

cruderudy, I guess the chain just needed to be used a bit more for the factory grease to make its presence known. After about 50 miles, I could easily see small clumps of grease over each roller seal (both sides) all the way up and down the chain. A YT video I saw about chain maintenance (I've had a lot to learn on the subject), the guy also recommended kerosene as the cleaner and Motul for lube. I ordered the latter plus Grease Ninja the same day and will get kerosene before the first clean/lube is due. I will stick with the 300-400 mile regimen, more often if ridden in rain.

As for the break-in, I am a by-the-book guy on my bikes and cars. Check out the random license plate the DMV gave me on Wednesday. BTB = by the book. A coincidence, I think not!

I did notice I will need to exceed the 4K RPM on the highway from time to time though...the speed limit here is 75 MPH and most (incl. myself) do 84. The ZX tops out at ~72 in 6th and 4K RPM.

piken, I had the same thought initially and had plugged in the battery tender (dealer had installed the wire during prep). It was low and took about 4 hours to charge fully. I then did a draw down stress test with my voltmeter while attempting to start the engine, which the battery passed, so it is good.

Hub, thanks for the detailed suggestions. I've come to notice that most of the time, the bike refuses to turn over while warm too (without help from the throttle). I must've been lucky those 1-2 times it started without a problem when warm. It even sometimes does so when cold. I will watch and see if things improve in the next few hundred miles after everything loosens up a bit.

As for miles, the bike was delivered with just 2 and oil level is good too (following the measuring method from the manual), if only very dirty. In fact, it rises very slightly above the high mark on the window. That's not to say the dealer earned their setup fee though. They forgot to attach the bottom rear cowling. The sales guy called me 2 days after the bike shipped to say the techs found the cowling, screws, and spacers in the crate while dismantling it. So he has sent it to me (came 2 days ago) and I will do the honors myself.

I forgot to give my first impressions: Ah...what's there to say all of you don't already know? It is incredible. I have never driven/ridden any machinery, regardless of the number of wheels, that is quite this smooth. I love the factory exhaust; it sounds like an F16 that was just yelled at by its parents for speaking too loudly, which quieted it right up without losing the turbine whine. I always try to be smooth with my throttle (Nick I. really drills that into you) and the whooooooosh of the engine as it climbs up the tach with my rotating right hand is just amazing. I was grinning ear-to-ear the whole time.

I need to get used to the ergos still. Up shifts are hard for me; the pedal should be just a half inch wider to catch my boot. But I am going to keep practicing first to see if I can get used to it. Same with the peg distance. My knees do not tuck under the tank properly at the stock reach. I am going to give myself some more time to try and get used to it before deciding on the lowering kits.

Speaking of up shifts, they are also a bit jerky for me. Again, something I need to practice coming from a cruiser.

Mine has also died after cold start up a couple of times. Especially after it sat for a long time. but always started right up on second try. Never been a issue. Love the color on your new 14. Looks very nice. Have fun and be safe!

Thanks guys. Yes, the paint is a bit darker than it appears in most photos. The one above is pretty accurate.

My wife and kids were running errands when I went to the gym that day and said they saw me waiting at a light. Apparently, the Ninja was a head turner for cars passing by in the other direction (I'm usually watching mirrors). I'm glad I ended up getting this paint option.

Great color, when I first viewed that color I was dead set against it, but now after a bit of time, I really like it... Best of luck, Ride Safe...

Thanks! Yes the exhaust is great...the bike is loud in style and color, but the exhaust is quiet; nice contrast!

We have a lot of family visiting for July 4th. Can't wait until everyone is gone and I can take the beast on a longer ride.
