SouthPawCO's build thread
01/31/17 5:09 PM

Well after much debate and penny pinching, I finally pulled the trigger on the parts to bring my bike back to life. If any of you have followed me thread (http://zx14ninjaforum.com/messages.cfm?threadid=498EE770-E858-2964-1FF2277F70459923) you will see what I started with. I know a lot of people don't like fleabay stuff but to be honest, I have had very good luck and they had everything I needed. The parts should all be arriving within the next two weeks but I am not sure on an exact start date yet. I definitely want the fairings on sooner than later so if that stands show up first, I will star the tear down process. I plan on posting a lot of pictures because this thing deserves to be pretty all over again. If anyone is interested in the old plastics, I would like to get rid of them for CHEAP! Anyways here is the pictures of what I ordered today. I shopped around the last two weeks and I was able to get EVERYTHING for $531 shipped between fleabay and amazon.

This is what it currently looks like now:

And here is everything that is on its way:

Looks good. careful on the faux Pazzos. If the hole in the bushing where the push pin from the maaster cylinder goes is not flat bottomed like OEM, you may need to dremmel it flat (if they used a pointed drill bit). Easy to do. The lever will sit flat and perpendicular to a drill press or Dremmel stand.

Thanks guys! I will look the levers over carefully but the last set I bought for my '08 ZX10R fit like a glove. These are just going to be temporary until I throw on some ASV shortys. As of now, everything has shipped. I am also going to do brake/clutch master cylinder flushes, coolant flush (possibly refill with engine ice) and an oil change. I am going to inspect the brake pads if they are 50% worn, toss a new set on. I may even look at a new chain and sprocket setup if the current one doesn't clean up.

I will be doing that this weekend. Everything showed up so I will start it probably Friday night or Saturday afternoon. If I had to guess, I believe the fairings on it now are FleaBay ones.

On a side note, the stands that I ordered are excellent. Front and rear for $69 free shipping and Vortex spools for $18. They are very sturdy and will make working on the bike this weekend much easier.

That looks like the fairing kit I bought. Mine all fit great. Except the rear seat cowl. It had a decent gap between it and the seat. The rear side pieces also slope down at the front like a gen 2. Otherwise everything fit like a glove. I picked mine up from a US seller that had them in stock. I had them in 3-4 days. Paid $285 shipped for the full fairing. Finish is really pretty good for the price had a couple small spots with thin paint but not really where you can see it

Well I tackled it this weekend and I'm very pleased on how it turned out. I would say the fairings fit 98% or better. There was only two spots that needed a little convincing to fit correctly but overall they fit great. I was really surprised on many pieces the fairing kit came with. It included all the inner plastics and the exhaust heat shield already installed in the proper places. The bolt kit was great and had everything I needed and more. Overall, I ended up with some recycled good plastics, extra bolts/hardware which will make good spares. I got all the fluids changed except the antifreeze which will most likely be replaced with Engine Ice during the summer. I'll post all the pictures tomorrow but I'm very pleased to bring this thing back to life.

-New fairings
-New bolt kit
-New Windscreen
-New levers
-New brake fluid and clutch fluid
-Synthetic oil change
-6K HID's
-New bar ends
-Frame sliders

Things to be done still:
-License plate bracket (already ordered, just waiting)
-194 Green LED's for corner lights (ordered)
-Chain service (possibly new kit -1/+2)
-Coolant flush (Engine Ice)
-Spark plugs (around 20k)
-Air Filter (next oil change)
-New tires at the end of the season or next

Truly night and day difference SouthPaw. That bike looks awesome now. Well worth all that work you put into it. I do like the all black. Good job.

Bike looks great. I'm also a fan of the all black. Where did you order your lights? Do you have a link? Is it night and day different than stock?

I ordered the green LED's and HID's off amazon. Originally the HID kit was for my truck but it required a different kit. I kept it and got lucky it was the same type of bulb for the ZX. If you are going to do anything to your bike, HID's are a huge improvement from stock.

This is the HID kit I used:

Put in the green LED 194's last night and they look great. They are really bright but I am hoping it doesn't attract the law regarding having green lights.

I decided to clean and service the chain/sprocket tonight. After doing so, I noticed it was in really good shape. I used WD40 and a nylon brush, shop towels and elbow grease to get all the grim off. After it was all clean inner and outer, I threw some chain lube on it. None of the teeth were rounded or broken and the chain was good and tight. It came out great.

At the same time, I've been looking at an APE chain tensioner. My bike has really quieted down since the oil change but it would be nice to have it quiet all the time. Prior to the oil change, the chain would rattle longer than I wanted it to. Since the new oil, it seems to oil rattle a few seconds and it clears up. That might be my next project.

Whistle clean brother. Looks good. I think that is the same chain Kawi pit on my bike a couple of weekends ago. I was used to the all black but this gold one is growing on me.
Should be able to get the bike out today with temps in the 60's forecasted. Kudos on the green LED's, they look spooky man!

Thank you! I took it to work yesterday (32 degrees) and it rode beautifully. The guys at work remembered what it looked like last year and they couldn't believe the transformation. I am really enjoying bringing this thing back to life.

I think I am going to switch it over to Engine ICE before the hot weather comes in. Seems like it has good reviews and it probably has the original coolant in it from 2006. I wish I would have done it when it was all apart but now I know how to get to everything. I may do the APE chain tensioner but I can't bring myself to it quite yet.

On another note, while having the bike on the stands the front wheel will not spin freely. I know it isn't supposed to spin completely freely but it seems to drag quite a bit. Anyone have any in sight on this? Figured I would ask here before starting a new thread.

I am also trying to figure what I am missing on the ram air covers. They have three mounting points and I have no idea what goes behind the third. Does anyone know what bracket or piece I am missing here to put a bolt through it?

Read good reviews on engine ice myself but I think I'll hold tight for the time being. Yes, I agree that it is not that big of a deal to take the bike apart anymore. I had it fully naked myself doing all that wiring.

Not sure about the wheel drag although I know the brake shoes do make minimal contact therefore slowing down the spinning. I saw one video where a guy installed ceramic bearings and before he put the calipers on he spun the wheel. It rotated for almost 6 minutes before it stopped. Much different with the calipers and pads on.

No help on the ram air cover. Mine screw into a tab on the cowling...I believe. You may need to start a new thread about the ram air covers to get a reply. Not a lot of action this low in the forum.

Took a photo of the PIAA's this evening with the driving lights on. Those lights are monsters. Put the bright lights on and it looks like a light plant coming at you.
Good Luck and keep up the great work brother.

SouthPaw,
There should be a metal bracket screwed to the fairing that has one of those threaded rubber inserts that lines up with the hole in the ram air cover. I think the headlight or marker light wiring is zip tied to it too. The cover will also have a tab that needs to lock into a slot right next to the tach or speedo depending on what side of the bike. If the tab is broken off the cover will rattle like mine does.
