Coffman shorty exhaust
01/20/22 4:38 AM

Has anyone tried a Coffman Shorty? I have a 2010 zx14 and looking to get a deeper exhaust note than the stock exhaust. Over here in Australia the options available are pretty poor but the Coffmans look good

Are you sure you want this note even at idle? How many decibels do you think that is? I lost hearing in my right ear. Welcome to the club... Better think again about joining.

Sounds great! Wear ear plugs. IMO we should all wear earplugs just for wind noise over the helmet.

There's nothing wrong with obnoxiously loud. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I was going suggest a Brock's full system but I see you can grab a set of those Coffmans' for a little over 500 bucks. It's nice to reduce the header weight but for the price difference in this particular case, I'd say that's up to you. My OEM header on my 2008 was 10 lbs, a Brocks header is probably about 5 lbs and the muffler about 3 or 4. Brocks says 8 lbs for the whole thing and I have heard that's about what it is. I see an Alienhead right now for $1200 shipped. I'd go with that instead of slipons.

Some super helpful responses but now I'm even more unsure what to buy.

Maybe I should spell out what I'm trying to do:

I use the bike 90% for commuting to work on the freeway (which is often a carpark in rush hour). I lane split alot so want a noisy bike as it helps be more noticed and less likely to get swiped by cage drivers switching lanes.

The stock exhaust is super quiet compared to my last bike (12R). So I'd like to make it louder. Personally I think the stock exhausts lack a deep tone so I'd like to get that back

Whilst it should be loud, being super-abnoxious loud is not an option. I don't like it for a start and neither will the neighbours. I was hoping the Coffman's weren't abnoxious with the baffles in but maybe I'm kidding myself

The bike already has plenty of HP so I'm not fussed about gaining any, especially as I rarely open the bike up and use it for commuting mostly. However, if the new exhaust decimates my fuel economy then that's probably a show stopper as I believe there are probably solutions out there (hopefully) that can tick all the boxes without decimating the fuel economy or losing HP. Hopefully I'm not kidding myself...........

I don't think you'll lose any hp. You should gain a little on top if you tune for the pipe. A tune might increase the fuel economy too. The stock fueling is probably going to be richer than a custom tune. As for the level of loudness, I'd probably look for something quieter than an Alienhead if you don't want to wake the neighbors. I hear Akrapovic isn't too loud at normal rpm. I imagine the Coffmans with baffles are just about what you're looking for.
