Turning over 20k on my '11 and the only maintenance I've done is regular oil and filter changes, chain wax, and of course tires. Chain and rear sprocket show no wear but I guess I should be considering some serious maintenance at this point?!? Coolant, clutch and brake fluids....? Still runs like a scalded dog and I'd hate to tackle valve adj. if not needed...thoughts?

You should do the valve lash check soon. I did mine at 28,000 and all of the exhausts were tight. I wouldn't go any farther than 28,000. Now I am at 44,000 and I checked them again since I set them to minimum clearance last time. All were unchanged from the last adjustment. I believe they do not change a whole lot after 20-2500 miles. I'll check them again at 65,000.

Checking them is not too bad. Adjusting them is twice as much work. If you don't have the time, find a good shop that will let you come in to view the tech slide the feller gauges in to show you what the clearance is. FIND A GOOD, RELIABLE SHOP.

The brake fluid is easy to change. You don't even need to drain it. You can suck most of the fluid out of the reservoirs and fill with fresh fluid. Use that a while and do it again. You usually have to buy a lot more brake fluid than the bike will hold anyway. ...or if you have an afternoon to mess around, go ahead and pump it all out, then bleed the air.

Coolant is really not too bad to change either.

I think you can procrastinate on the fluids a while if you want. It's not going to work better with fresh fluids, just preventative maintenance.

How about spark plugs? I haven't changed mine yet. About to tackle that. Valve lash check is a good time to do that because you will have the head cover off foe easier access to the plugs. Blow the wells out before removing the cover....can't blow them out with the cover off.

Thanks Rook...great advice!
I haven't changed plugs either...it doesn't miss a lick, but I might when checking valve lash, also good tip with the air to make sure no dirt gets in the cylinders. Thanks again.

I have a video tutorial about blowing them out. I think you are pretty safe to vacuum along the stick coil as you pull it up. You'll feel two clicks as the sealing ribs on the stick coil come out of the well. If you want to be extra double sure, give it a blow after the SC is out.
