Need someone to repair my 08 ZX-14 in Nashville, TN
06/01/12 7:06 PM

Hey guys, I'm in Nashville, TN and have an '08 ZX-14 that's been crashed. I COULD fix it, but I'm not that great at it and it would take me forever compared to someone experienced. I'm fine with paying, but I don't want to pay dealer prices.

The bike is basically missing whole half of the head assembly (hit corner of a BMW SUV), some wires were probably cut off, etc. This is the main thing. There's a lot of cosmetical stuff (such as most fairings missing), but I'm not worried about that. The bike DOES run as-is, it's just missing 2 of the headlights and headlight wiring is a mess.

Anyone willing to take this on? How much per hour or for the whole thing? Text me and I can send you some pics.

Thanks!
Alex

You are cruel Hagrid, very cruel. You know there is only one thing worse than the offer of a well setup shop c/w free labour too far away to take advantage of ................................................................ Ah crap, there is nothing worse. I was going to say twisting a knife in a fresh wound while pouring salt in.... but somehow it falls just a hair shy. - LOL

Haha I think you nailed it, spyglass. :)

Dealership estimated repairs at $6k... wow wow wow. Just bought $800 worth of parts off e-bay and such, will probably need another couple hundred, but the rest should just be labor. Guess I'll have to actually do some work with this one!

For $6,000 you can just go buy a used one and ride!

Having a dealerships repair our fallen loved ones in never an option. Like Cooter suggested you can buy a decent used bike for $6k. The labour is the killer. You have to pay for it to be torn apart to the bone to properly assess the full damage. A complete list has to be made and all the parts ordered. This take the most time. Meanwhile the bike sits taking up valuable shop space. Most dealers are not interested in aftermarket parts. Factory parts can often be twice that of aftermarket.

Clear as spot in your garage and set up a nice big table. Get a service manual. Lay the parts out on the table in the order that you remove them. Bolts and hardware can be stuck in pieces of cardboard to keep them grouped and labeled. Take pictures as you go. Use a clip board and write down each piece that appears damaged as you remove it. The manual will help you assign part numbers to the pieces. If the damage is mostly cosmetic you will find that once you get over the shock and horror it will be alright. Be careful with front end damage. If in doubt, strip the bike down and pay to have a good dealer mechanic look it over (frame, engine mounts, forks, front axle, brakes, steering column, etc). It does not take much of a hit to bend forks.

Let us know how you make out. (and of course we want before and after pictures..... mostly after pictures)

Plus one for DIY. Its a big commitment in time and patience, however no challenge is met without reward.

If you don't have tools yet remember to buy metric.

Alex, I crashed my other bike last month while on vacation. Luckily, I was able to finish vacation and ride home. So far, I`ve spent over $2,000 in parts and I`m not done. Time: uncountable

There are some dealers I'd let rebuild my crashed bike but very few.

When I lived in San Jose CA all those decades, I always drove 45 minutes pulling my bike trailer to take it to Dublin Kawasaki.

At the time, they held the LSR for license-plate wearing, pump gas bikes, and had ZX11s closed-loop fuel injected before Kawasaki even had a fuel injected bike for sale.

These guys could rebuild a crashed bike like new, because they did it quite a few times.
