Fairings question
02/20/17 5:06 PM

Hi folks,

Newbie here and my first post, so I'll get straight to it.

Been riding for over 40 years, mainly on Triumphs but have been looking recently for a new sports tourer.
Found a mint 2012 ZX14R here in Australia with 4K on the clock. Absolutely stonking bike, I'm hooked !!
Have put a two brothers exhaust on it, some bar risers and more customs to come.
However, out recently in heavy traffic, had that split second loss of concentration (ahhh bugger) and of course, the container truck I was behind slammed on his brakes and, well, I managed to not stop in time (another 3 inches was all I needed !!).
Luckily, no structural damage, just fairings, mountings plastics now required.
Just had a quote from the dealership of over $4K for new fairings, plastics and fixings. Yikes !!
Been looking on the net and I see several companies in China doing plastics and injection mouldings, so here is my question.....
What's the consensus on using after market fairings ? Some say they fit well, some say run away !!
Of course, my paint is the Black with Blue Fleck, so a bit of a problem getting the colour match right.....

Any and all comments welcomed (flame suit on !!).....

If you're going to go fast, i wouldn't use the aftermarket stock replacements. I've heard a few stories of them flying off.

Aloha climb280, I've purchased and used 3 sets of Chinese fairings in the past year and a half. Regardless of how many different adds you see they all come from the same factory and molds though painters may be different. The first set I bought looked just like the factory 2012 limited I had including the flame decals. The fit was decent with a little work, the green paint wasn't even close and their disclaimer is they use their own mix of racing colors, clear coat had a few runs but nothing horrible. The second set I bought as bare white un-painted and the plastic did need some work for paint prep. I did all the trimming and fitting work and had $2500 worth of paint put on them. I ran those both last season and they both went 160mph plus without "flying off". I'm anal about using all the hardware and proper clips. The 3rd set I just bought to replace the poor paint match green set I opted for black which happened to show up with a not mentioned blue fleck, maybe slightly thin on the paint not really black but more like a dark charcoal.
I guess the moral of the story is some times you get more than you paid for, some times just what you paid for, they're definitely slightly more brittle than the factory stuff but even as race only with some hard launches and landings after unexpected wheelies I haven't cracked any.
Good luck with your search and purchase, plan on 4-8 weeks from order to delivery here in Hawaii, to your side of the pond I don't have a clue. The last black set now on the 2012 back in full street trim arrived the quickest in just over three weeks. Aloha, Rick B. Now on my new 2015 Turbo bike.

I purchased a set from a seller in California. He had the ok on hand ready to ship. Paid $285 shipped for every piece of plastic on the bike. Was on my doorstep in 3 days. A couple thin spots in the paint. Only fitment issue I had was the seat cowl. There was a decent gap between it and the seat. I almost think I received gen 2 rear panels. Mine is a gen 1. Maybe the gen 2 seats are a little thicker where the cowl mounts. Overall I was very pleased with mine for the money.

Contact the seller and ask if they have the mount points molded in or glued on. The glued on mounts do come off. The molded ones are usually pretty good.

Thanks fordtech for your comprehensive info, much appreciated.
We are actually planning a trip to Hawaii later this year (looking forward to visiting the Pearl Harbour memorial).
Might have to come and visit your impressive bikes too now !! Didn't realise you guys have a dragstrip there....

Thanks also maddox and maddevil regarding the mount points, great insider info.

Cheers guys.

My bike was done as a 75th. anniversary tribute to Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu and Naval air station 30 which is our race track on Maui. We actually run on runway 14/32 built during WW2 as a training site. You can check us out at www.mrp.org for the schedule and links to the tracks on the islands of Kauai and Hawaii, known as the "big island" If you're coming to Maui be sure to try to contact me. Aloha, Rick B...

Wow, fantastic paint job Rick.....

Ahh yes, using the old runway, that makes sense as I didn't think there was a drag strip on Maui.

Actually, your Nagasaki reference has some relevance to me.... my Dad was on HMS The Duke Of York in 1945, when she rendevoused with USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the surrender.
The Duke Of York was the first British Battleship to arrive in Nagasaki, 3 days after the bomb was dropped. Of course, your fellas were already there.....

As you say, never to be repeated..... My Dad did tell me once what they all saw once landside..... horrifying injuries and the smell of death.....enough said.

Will check out your schedule for later in the year. Cheers, John.
