Anyone ever paint the wheel speed sensor ring ?
04/01/17 1:02 PM

When I change tires next time I was thinkin bout painting the ring on front and back, I just think they would look better black. Anyone done this? Would it affect the sensors from reading? Wouldn't be a heavy coat just some high temp spray paint. Any input would be great, thanks

Try vinyl first. I wouldn't leave vinyl on there long because it could wreck stuff if it comes loose. My vinyl wheel tape stays on great though.

Are the sensors not magnetic? If so, paint should not hurt/change anything.

easier to remove than paint if there's a problem. I have 3/16" wheel stripes in vinyl and they stay on until I remove them. Go ahead and paint if you want. Paint remover probably won't hurt anything if you need to clean it off but you'd have to take the wheel off again. Actually, alcohol will probably take it off if you do it within several hours.

I personally would not mod part of an important sensor system but the paint should not change the response or the signal of the pick-up.

You have about 30 slots to cut on each side? Stick the vinyl on and cut with an X-acto. 20 minutes, maybe. I doubt a thin coating would hurt. The anti-lock system must be designed to work in very wet conditions so why not painted conditions?

One very light coat of matt black would look good and be easy to wipe off with denatured alcohol if necessary. No need to apply more than one coat. My rear sprocket is painted with regular spray paint and it still looks like the day I painted it except where the chain runs on it.

Rook, look in the book. It says, 'any nick, debris, wrinkle; is going to upset the input.' So just some piece of vinyl sticking out, over the window opening; is going to upset the input. Painting the tone wheel is the only option.

LOL I don't have the Gen2 book, Hub...but a wrinkle in vinyl is not the same as a wrinkle in the metal. how would this thing work in a downpour if there was a film of water or mud that hit it?? Magnetic fields penetrate water and solid objects the same as air.

I think a light coat of any spray paint will be fine and easy to remove if you notice your ABS is not working as it should.

or if you apply vinyl the right way, it will be the same as paint but possible to remove without chemicals.

slap some masking tape on there and don't cut the slots. If that works, anything will.
