ZX-14R only takes ~3.2 quarts of oil?
07/27/14 6:14 AM

Posted in my other thread, but could really use a response ASAP as to whether or not I can ride in about 2 hours:

Did a full oil change with filter, re-filled with a 4-quart jug, idled bike for a few minutes, blipped the throttle a few times, checked the oil level the next day, oil reads too high, right at the top of the sight window. Decided to remove some oil.

Removed a little oil, checked level, then a little more, checked level, then a little more, checked level ... ended up removing almost an entire quart ... didn't measure it, but it's at least 3/4 of a quart. And even then it's still up at the high mark.

Is something wrong here? OK to ride it with only about 3.2 quarts?

Thank you ...

Ride wise, go. After the ride, find the level between the glass viewer. If showing in the window, fine. If not showing in the window, add.

Are you sure it wasn't a 5-quart jug? I just did mine for the umpteenth time and it always takes just less than 4 1/2 quarts to hit the top of the sight glass.

When I was looking at cycle oil, most of the MC oils were being sold in 4 quart jugs, or 1 quart. But no, if you refilled it with 3.2 sounds like something didn't quite go right. Depending on your oil change frequency (annually or every 3k miles), I wouldn't worry about it unless this is happening every time your changing oil.

Whoa, hold on there buck-a-roo, you stated the bike, and let it sit overnight, and checked the oil
level ? that's why it read high, manual says to start bike and check in a few minutes ...

I fill mine to the high line about 5-10 min after warmup, the next morning, it is higher,
but should be normal ....

Also some oils like Motul, are sold in liters, not quarts, more in liters than quarts ..

I told her to go to the other thread and she said, oh you mean fill me up with my eyes closed to the quarts filled and watch the window did turtle mention? An then what? An then there was this I told you so about book measurements and widow cleaning, but noooooooooooooo. And then what did she say? She said it was like looking at my L's and wasn't looking at my bra zillion window shade.

oil reads too high, right at the top of the sight window.

If the oil level was at the the top of the window, that is above the top line and almost above the window, that is way high. The only time I saw that was when I checked the oil after filling and before I ran the oil into the filter.

manual says to start bike and check in a few minutes ...

That's what the Gen1 manual says too but it's not a good way to check oil. You must remember, this is written by native Japanese speaking individuals. They don't always come across. I think what they are saying is "fill crankcase with specified amount of oil, start engine (so filter will definitely get filled), let bike sit a real long time so all free oil has ample time to run back to the crankcase, oil in filter is trapped by anti-drainback valve in filter.

All I know is that I put exactly the volume the manual says to put in, run the engine, let it sit until it is not only cold but has definitely had enough time for all oil to trickle back to the crankcase (several hours) and my level is right at the top line. Never over. If the oil level is above the top when cold, that is too much oil. Oil will just get blown up to the air box. The air filter may get wet. Oil will drain from the airbox drain tube.
