14 vs. 14R Handling
07/22/12 9:51 AM

Hi everyone, latley 90% of the comparision has been between HP, torque 1/4 times and Dyno runs.

Now for something differant. Like to know how much better the R is in the twisties compared to the 14

I found the 2012 ZX-14R to be more flickable and easier to turn in than my 2008 ZX-14!

Without a doubt. And stays planted better as well. Brakes are better as well.

better suspension, better handling, better mass distribution. I wasn't impressed with the brakes and I'm not sure they were upgraded.

I didn't realize that they had made any changes to the suspension on the new bike. Does anyone know whay they /changed/replaced/modified on the R?

"Interesting considering it is heavier....."

Heavier yes but the unsprung weight is less and weight distribution better, pus stiffer F&R springs with revised damping settings.

2012 new frame design
• Engine is positioned forward in the frame, with the slightly longer wheelbase and front/rear weight balance carefully designed to achieve high-speed stability and responsive handling
• Longer swingarm adds high-speed stability and is gusseted to better cope with the new engine’s power production
• Massive head pipe casting contributes to frame rigidity
NOT THE SAME FRAME AS GENERATION 1

There are some that won't believe things...even if they read itLOL!!!!!But we don't have any here... I already mentioned how sitting mid saddle and carving produced a more planted feel and allowed a quicker turn in and lean speed. You're right sReynolds...very right. It IS a different bike.

All one needs to do is...simply remove the muffler hanger on an earlier 14.NOW...remove the muffler hanger on a 14R...One small part...?????One small part that contributes to the new frame metallurgy and design.I said before...when I first removed that hanger...I though it was made out of plastic...I did.Nope...it's aircraft grade aluminum. And that's just one component...

Thank goodness, the original 2006 felt like it was floating...especially the rear spring. Once I dialed in the suspension(&replaced the rear spring), it wasn't too bad. I'm looking forward to doing it all over again...hopefully starting tonight when I FINALLY pick it up from the dealership.

Smoother on sudden downshifts, wife feels a lot more safer & comfortable on my 14r than on my 2010ZX14 I had before,me also having a bad ROM in my R/H leg noticed a differance in the front pegs position on the test ride to my former ZX with the 1" drops on! and I could tell forsure!!! cause at the time my leg was set at 73 degree,s bend on that day .

Traded my beloved '02 CBR 954RR that I've had since it was new for a blue 12r. I love the softer ride in general - much more comfy - almost as nice as my ST1300 for the distance. I am happy with the performance in the twisties too - I'm not dragging knees or anything but I find the handling great. The only thing that makes me want to mess with it is it feels kinda squirly when practicing the emergency braking thing from $150+. The CBR (with about 200 less pounds) was definitely more confidence inspiring in this area. Any suspension tuners out there? Although I've been riding sporty bikes for 30 years I'm sort of clueless. Haven't gotten to it but I think I'll start out cranking about +2 on the front preload and both dampening settings, while leaving the back end alone. Sound like a reasonable plan?

Glad to hear the positive reviews on handling... As coming from a Zx10r I think this will be my biggest challenge..I know I won't be able to move it as easy in the twisties which is gonna suck, but I will have the suspension set up so hopefully it won't be too bad.....

No point spending the doe on New exhaust if I'm just going to take it off. Ass far as Batt is concerned, how is the little guy holding up with two fans running in traffic on a hot day,,,, Still going to get one but was curious ???

I'd say...you can't go wrong Romes. She's performed MAHVELOUSLY!Nary a peep of reluctance to fire...everytime...even in the cold. One charge...initial one just to be sure....if she's running...there shouldn't be any problem with the two fans...long as yer stator's doing fine....mine has run w/the two fans going....several times in traffic....all's well!
