Question on Buell Peg Mod
02/26/09 2:15 AM

Hi all, I purchased a set of Buell pegs to get some more leg room (6'2" rider here). However, after grinding them down with my dremel I noticed they were much thinner than the stock pegs. I was uncertain how much weight the thinned pegs could take and have not yet attached them.

Any thoughts on this?

Cheers

I have Buell Ulysees pegs on mine and all I had to do was make the pin hole bigger. I forgot that with the other Buell pegs you have to kinda custom fit them.
Don't have an answer but the guyz on the ZRX board have to do some grinding to but have never complainded about on breaking unless the scooter fell over.

I had to grind mine down also; been on for 2-1/2 years & 21k miles with no problems.

I weight 300+ lbs. and I've never had a problem with mine. I can even stand on them with no problems. So I think your good to go.

Just finished mine last week, and yes, the top got a little thin, but after a good ride I'm glad I did the work to fit them. Very nice.

I'm going to have my nephew the welder, who is VERY good with aluminum and stainless steel, put in a gusset plate (say, 1/8") under the existing top part. The plate will fit in fine, the spring has big gaps top and bottom anyway. Then he can weld the gusset plate and I can drill it out again. So the top will be the same thickness as the bottom again.

For sure no problems that way.

There was a lot of talk about this on the ZRX forum, rumours abounded of people on Ulysees having a peg break while standing up on it (!!!!!!). This isn't helped by the fact that you had to slightly nibble the webbing that provides all the strength (the gusset) to make it fit.

In the end, it was determined that the pegs are likely NOT going to break from just standing on them, and any that did break on the Adventure bikes had been shock loaded on rough surfaces and/or dropped onto the pegs without someone realizing they were taking damage.

I put them on my ZRX, and the thought of a peg breaking while standing up for a few minutes to stretch your legs (ain't gonna happen on a ZX-14 unless you have LSL haha) was enough of a nagging thought at all times that I made sure to keep my feet tucked in at all times.

shudder.

I sincerely doubt you can weld this stuff, it is junky pot metal and I am not sure it would be worth trying to even braze nicely. Let us know what he says though...

Have had a set on my '06 since 06 - (well over 200#) but I took more metal off the bottom than the top - the bottom is in compression, the top is in tension - it seemed like a stronger way to go - anyway almost 4 years and no problems so far, major plus for comfort. Along with Convertibars I now have a comfortable sport touring ride that can be set up for pure sport in a couple of seconds.
