Stock vs TRE vs Flies Out
04/17/09 9:19 AM

Yesterday I finally got a chance for my first ride on a ZX14. A dealership has a completely stock "Arrest Me" Red 2006 with 4900 miles. I only rode it about 15 miles but let me say first and foremost - Holy Cow! That Is Insane Speed! Scary Power! Obviously peak hp is not an issue but there was one thing I didn't like regarding the engine. It felt a little soft until about 6500-7000 rpms, then hold on! I prefer a smoother power delivery with good torque down low then power building in a very linear manner.

So here's my question. What is the difference in regards to power delivery between a stock bike, one with a TRE, one with flies out and one with a TRE and flies out? Does any scenario add much grunt down low? Do they smooth out the power delivery? Make it more linear?

fishhuntride:

I removed the flies from my 2007 and added a Power Commander with the "flies out, stock exhaust" map and it completely changed the bike at low RPMs (where it was soft). Don't know about the TRE... -bg

Pulling the flies in an '06-'07 will gain about 25 ft lbs of torque down low. Running a TRE on a flieless zx14 won't gain more power. It will only eliminate some decel pop by smoothing out fuel delivery at 3500 rpms.

Running a TRE on a bike with flies will just make the flies open much sooner, giving the bike more power down low. Not sure of the exact #'s though.

I say pull the flies and be done with it. If the decel pop bugs ya, then install a TRE.

Yep, I've run my 2006 stock, stock with a TRE008 and now with flies out, Yoshi exhaust, PCIII, TRE006a and custom map. The stocker is anemic off the bottom end, starts to pull right off idle then kinda goes flat at about 3000-5000 then comes on again at 6000 rpm in a big rush to the redline.

Competely stock with a TRE008, the bike pulls much harder down low, about 15 more lb-ft torque but you still have a bit of a flat spot at 3000. Definitely a big improvement and pulls more like an '08 on the bottom with added topend of an '06.

Take the flies out, add PCIII and a good map and hang on for dear life. Mine hits hard just off idle and will wail right up to the red line. It is sick! If you add an aftermarket exhaust, either full system or slipons, it will decel pop (backfire). Some guys like this, I don't. Quick fix is to install block off plates. Better yet is to install Ivan's TRE006a. This will eliminate fuel shutoff during throttle rolloff, stops the backfiring and smooths out fuel delivery on throttle pickup. Bottom line is your power delivery is silky smooth, important with over 170 rear wheel hp on tap. I run Ivan's flies out map and have never ridden a smoother power band. My new CBR 1000's torque curve feels like a roller coaster ride by comparison.

Ditto everything that Kruz just said.
I have the exact same set up except that I have Scorpion slip ons and the Ivan's set up works as advertised.

I just look like this!

Pulling those flies is a wonderful thing...I waited a year before I did it....do it sooner rather than later

Pull the flies. The TRE just opens the flies earlier. In terms of getting more linear power delivery, getting your bike dyno tuned is the only way. The tech who did my bike has done over 100 ZX14s. Almost everyone had a dip in HP between 3000 and 5000 rpm. It will also get your air-fuel ratios right.
