Rear Tire Plug
08/18/13 11:14 AM

So, I just pulled a small nail out of my nearly new Shenko Verge rear tire. (1,000 miles) The nail was off-center by about an inch, maybe a bit less. It's not in the the tread. It's on a flat spot whth will contact the road on left turns and even lane changes probably. I used one of those Slime car tire plug kits. I got at least half of the length of the plug in the the hole. Couldnt get it in any farther because I was touching the rim. I had to really work on this to get anything to penetrate the hole. I don't think. I did any other damage but I haven't ridden it yet. Trimmed the plug as flush as I could get it. What do you guys think? I won't be doing any track days on it but I do like to run it hard now and then on the highway. From what I've read, people have been saying that they have not had any issues after plugging a tire if it was plugged properly. Replcce or keep the tire? I'd like to get the rest of the season out of it at least.

You will get plenty of opinions on this subject. I plugged mine several hundred miles ago and have had no problems so far. I plugged my Q2 rear in the middle groove with a rope plug but also used plug glue. No tracking or dragging on it but ride like normal. I can't take a trip to the corner store without at least one WOT!

Thanks! I used a rope plug. Poured some soapy water over it to see if I see bubbles. So far so good. Gonna check the tire pressure in a bit. Mine isn't plugged in a groove though. Guess I'll see what happens.

Keep watch on the air pressure, and if it holds, run the tire until it's shot. On a front tire, plug it to get it home and then replace the tire.

Rode around town and some highway. Jumped on it hard several times but not hard enough to lift the front wheel. It seems to be holding. Checked it the next day and it was down .5 psi. Thinking that might be ok but I think I'm going to try and get it patched at a shop. I think a patch on the inside of the tire might be more reliable than a rope plug. Has anyone heard of a plug or a patch failing on a bike? I've driven cars forever on plugged tires. My worry is that some heavy torque or hard braking might pull the plug out. And that I possibly damaged the tire putting the plug in. It seemed to ride fine. It didn't feel any different than before I plugged it.

Ok, not sure if anyone is interested but I've done some reading on this so here goes. Maybe it will be valuable info to someone. In a nutshell, there isn't any definative proof as to how much a tire is compromised afer it has been repaired. I only read of one case where a plug came out during actual riding. And even then, the author of that post didn't describe the circumstances or how he was riding when it happend. He apparently lived to tell the tale thank God! He didn't mention any other damage or drama.
There are a lot of variables here including but not limited to hole size and location. Thread damage was mentioned as well. From what I read, even the manufacturers can't say for sure if a plugged tire is really safe or not. They take the conservative side and recommend replacing the tire. I did read something interesting. One theory is that once a tire is compromised, the area of the puncture is more susceptible to heat and seperation of the components of the tire. The plug itself could react differently than the rest of the tire to heat and pressures during riding at higher speeds and cornering. It was also mentioned that the steel threads of a tire could wear and loosen a plug.
It seems the recommended speed on a plugged tire is 75mph. I also read that it brings the tire down one speed rating. Well, I don't know about you guys but if I was going to limit myself to 75mph, I wouldn't own a mighty Z! Some say an internal patch is better. Some recommend a mushroom plug. But nowhere on any site or source have I been able to find anything conclusive from rider or manufacturer that could say how a plugged tire has performed except the one post i mentioned.
So in conclusion I think I'll be buying a new tire. I ride to blow-off steam from the work week and have fun. Thinking about and riding like I have a bad tire won't be fun. I also read that it might be hard to find a shop that will patch a tire due to possible liability issues.

i rolled off a ferry to find a nail in tire, stopped at garage asked for loan of pliers to pull nail, i wanted to plug it, guy was not to sure about lending me the pliers, and would not recommend that i plug it, i rode across 3 countries with plug and back over 2 weeks, over every type of road surface, hi speed and with road temps up at 35c
never a problem, i always plug,

I read countless posts like yours motero, where someone rode a plugged tire to the very end. I guess what is comes down to is piece of mind. I was riding mine a bit for the last week or so until my new tire arrived. It performed fine. No leaks or issues of any kind. But I have to say that I was thinking about it every time I rode and I didn't push the bike like I normally do. I also had my pressure gauge in my pocket everywhere I went and was periodcially checking the pressure when I parked. No fun to worry when trying to enjoy a ride. I was not able to find a shop around me that would patch it. My mechanic even recommended a new tire and he's not the person I buy tires from. Glad to hear yours lasted and saved you a few bucks! Not to get off topic, but when I dropped my bike off at the mechanics shop, he had a gorgeous green 14 there. Stretched w nitrous and air-shifter and probably some other goodies I didn't notice. I asked what he was doing to it and I guess the poor guy blew it up on a dyno. My heart goes out on that one. There was a lot of money and love in that bike.

I put this in every new tire I install. lasts 25% longer, air doesn't escape, balances tire, catch a nail? pull it out , ride, it seals the hole. sales at your local cycle gear. Google ride on sealant.

I just had to plug a other one. Picked up what looked like a shoe nail. Went right into a sipe, otherwise it wouldn't have been long enough to cause a leak. Tire's got too much tread left to scrap.

Whoever replaces the tire next won't be too happy. That stuff makes a complete mess when the tire comes off the rim lol. Unless it's dried up by then.

Car tire I would plug. Motorcycle tire I may plug temporarily to get home but thats it. I would replace the tire just for safety and piece of mind.

1400 extra miles on the plugged tire and it's now down to the wear bars,so it will be replaced soon. But it hasn't lost a bit of air.
